COINCIDENCES I HAVE KNOWN

The day my sister passed away I was listening to my music library. After the phone call was over I went back to the music, " Last Dance" by Floyd Crammer was playing, her song, and I cried. This past Saturday at my sisters "Celebration of life" her -inlaw Julilan and grand Andrew were to play a music interlude of songs Mona loved. The first song that was played was "Last Dance". It gave me goose bumps, and yes I cried.

I have had many coincidences where things are similar. Three Women in my life Peggy, Wendy, and my wife Leanne (the names they go by) all have the same first name, which I did not know when I first met them, of Margaret. Here is where it gets funky, My mothers first name is Margaret but she went by Babe.

Coincidences? Hummmmm. Well food for thought anyway.

[SIZE3] We trundled off to bed at 11pm last night, there was a faint rumble of thunder off in the distance. By 11:17 all heck broke loose. Lightning flashes every ten seconds or so, thunder you could feel and marble size hail hitting the house with such force I thought the windows might brake. Not much sense staying in bed so we got up and watched the light show. The hail and wind was so bad you could not see more than 10 or 15ft away. It took almost an hour and half for the storm to pass and we could get back into bed. It only took another hour for the dogs to settle down.

8am and I am out looking at the yard. The garden? Forget it, the corn stalks are bare except for the cobs, beet tops shredded, pumpkins shredded, cucumbers shredded, carrots flattened, green onions flattened. Cherry tree? More fruit and leaves on the ground than on the tree, apple trees lots of leaves and some apples on the ground, apples on the tree pitted, same for the Saskatoon bushes. Many flower pots broken, some garden animals/ornaments broken. Mrsdinty's patio cherry tomatoes, how sad, she might get a few to ripen. The water table is so high the ground squishes when you walk across the lawn(as we drove around we saw a few people pumping out their basements).

So over all, it was a great light and sound show but the aftermath was not very nice. Good thing we are having our roof re-shingled and the farmer's markets are in full swing. Oh and let me know when you are finished with your Jack'o lantern this Halloween.

2:41am and I stand alone peering into the darkness around me, it is apparent the world does not sleep when night falls. The subtle noise, the silent wings, the gliding movement of the creatures of the dark are every where. From the insects who's tiny bodies can not stand the heat or light of day, speed from plant to plant, the predators who live off them follow silently behind. The silent mouse stalked by the hungry owl, the insects devoured by the sonic guided bat. Night goggles present a whole new nocturnal world to the eyes of a diurnal guest. A flick of a flashlight on and the phrase "drawn like a moth to a flame" enters the mind. A paradox to be sure, I stand alone, but "the night has a thousand eyes". Take time to embrace the night, not fear it. Next time you go camping, turn on the night and see a new world around you.

Ahhhhh Cinco de Mayo, the 5th of May. It has been snowing fairly steady for four days now and Chuppie our chihuahua went out looking for Spring and could not find it. The birds are not too happy either.

I surmise that we all did chores at home, like take out the trash, do dishes and things like that and received an allowance. But do you remember what your first paying job was?

I delivered news papers. What I liked about it....the money. What I did not like about it....It took me away from hanging out with the other , it was heavy (especially when the Calgary Stamped was on and the paper had the Stamped special section added to the paper), cold in the winter and had to be delivered during summer holidays. Other than that, I got money. Much to my chagrin I also learned the value of savings or putting away for a rainy day.

Inquiring minds want to know, what was your first paying job?

The music box

There are many types or styles of music boxes in today's world, but the most common type is one that holds jewelery. A box that when opened play's a loud, more often than not, favorite classical tune of the person who owns it. It also doubles as an alarm to let the owner know that some one has opened their box.

My mother had a music box given to her while she was a young girl and kept her hood treasures in it, as she got older she kept even(in her eyes)more important things in it. When she became a young lady it became her jewelery in it. As a mother, she kept items of the growing in it. It was hidden in her bedroom, and I knew nothing about it.

Then came her last , me of course, she had a candy dish that she would put candies in and allow us to have a piece of candy when we were "good". The candy dish was kept on the top of the cupboard. It was hard for me to be good, but I sure had a sweet tooth, so I would sneak a candy every so often. There were so many in there no one would know that I took one. Hah, mom noticed the candy in the dish going down quicker than when she let us have some.

Mom brought out this very pretty looking thing and told us this would be her new candy dish, and let us have a candy from it then closed the lid. As we wandered away she wound the music box up and put it on top of the cupboard. No one told me it played this loud music when the lid was opened, so you can imagine my surprise when I climbed up onto the cupboard took down the candy box, opened it and this noise began. Mom came around the corner like a hound after a fox and I was caught with the goods. Believe me, momma had strong hands and I had a sore butt. It was an event that I and the rest of the family would never let me forget.

After mom passed away the executor of her will (the oldest ) gave each of us the items mom wanted to pass onto each of us. Along with the other things mom gave to me, I received the music box. I opened it up, the music played and there was a note and a hard candy in it. The note said " My Dearest Dinty. You always tried to get what was in here, and had your ears boxed a few times for it, so now this is all yours. Take this candy and all my love and be good." it was signed just "Mom". My music box held a treasure money can't buy, memories of a mother who loved her .

Hope your good memories outweigh your bad ones.

Oh yes, it is a Swiss made blue metal music box with a glass dome over a Dutch country side scene on the lid. The tune is Gipsy Baron Treasure Waltz - J Strauss

In my last blog I mentioned a book called "A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen. Now I would like to introduce you to a book by Kristin von Kreisler called "An Unexpected Grace". This is an excerpt from the jacket's back cover.

"Lila Elliot knows she's lucky. A shooting rampage at her office left several colleagues dead and others wounded. Lila's injuries will heal in time. Yet though she gratefully retreats to her best friend's house to recuperate, Lila can't move past her fear and anger. Being drafted into caring for Grace - a shaggy, formerly abused golden retriever - only adds to her stress. But Grace, like Lila needs time and space to recover.

Grace only perks up for Adam, the neighbor who rescued her. Though struggling to make sense of her recent tragedy, Lila, an accomplished artist, begins to see beauty in Grace's wisps of fur and haunted eyes. And in helping Grace to trust, Lila, is being gently nudged toward the courage she needs to do the same.

Poignant and uplifting, An Unexpected Grace is a beautifully written story of compassion, healing and true soul mates - in all their guises."

For those of you who are in a reading group, there is a Reading Group Guide at the end of the book with lead-in discussion questions.

What did I take away from the book? Just when I think people should walk a mile in my shoes I meet a man with no legs.

Oh yeah, Kristin has other books you will enjoy.

Bob Cat or A Cat Named Bog

Quite a while ago I read a book review on a book called "A Street Cat Named Bob". The book was written by James Bowen.

James Bowen was a recovering drug addict, a homeless musician, busking on the streets of London to survive, but the moment he met an injured stray cat with ginger fur and big green eyes, his life began to change. Together James and Bob the cat faced the world - and won.

I must say I found it hard to put the book down when I had to attend to work and sleep, and could hardly wait to pick it up again. Ever have one of those books you don't want to end?

Then came the information that James Bowen had a sequel in the works. Today I found "The World According To Bob" I am on page 13 and glad to say I'm hooked again.

Even if you are not a cat lover, I am sure you will enjoy these books. Try it and then you can say "I read a good book today"

Ilove pie but I liked PI

Trust me, I really really do love pie, and now that I have finally watched the movie, I now like PI.

I resisted watching Life of PI, I mean how interesting can a movie about a person and a tiger in a life boat be? Tiger eats man, the end. A no brainer right?

Boy was I wrong. It dragged at the start but I slowly was pulled into the movie. It is thought provoking, the art work is wonderful and it will leave you wondering at the end. I wont go into the story but my and I had quite a long discussion about it. He and I are very much alike in a lot of things but our thoughts on religion are a little different. As it should be, what a dull world it would be if every one agreed on every thing.

As I said, I won't go into the story Life Of PI, but I will peak your interest in saying at the start there is more than two in the life boat.
I can also say the book is better than the movie, but the photography is breath taking.

If you haven't yet, see it, you just might like it also.
