waxing philosophically 2:41am and I stand alone peering into the darkness around me, it is apparent the world does not sleep when night falls. The subtle noise, the silent wings, the gliding movement of the creatures of the dark are every where. From the insects who's tiny bodies can not stand the heat or light of day, speed from plant to plant, the predators who live off them follow silently behind. The silent mouse stalked by the hungry owl, the insects devoured by the sonic guided bat. Night goggles present a whole new nocturnal world to the eyes of a diurnal guest. A flick of a flashlight on and the phrase "drawn like a moth to a flame" enters the mind. A paradox to be sure, I stand alone, but "the night has a thousand eyes". Take time to embrace the night, not fear it. Next time you go camping, turn on the night and see a new world around you. |
