Last Sunday night the community center where I volunteer, burned to the ground as a result of an electrical short in the kitchen. The shelter feeds approx. 100 less fortunates twice a day during the week and serves Sunday dinner.
30 churches in the community each take a day a month to collect food, which is donated by members of their congregation, and provide volunteers to help prepare it as well as serve it. They've been doing this for over 15 years! The center also provides counselling, clothes, lodging and whatever is needed. Various markets in the area also donate unbelievable amounts of food to supplement the churches' donations.
Until they can find another building to house the center, we volunteers have been asked to make 300 sandwiches and salads tomorrow to feed at least a 100 people. Tables will be set up on the sidewalk to accomodate everyone.
Since I have been involved, I have met some very wonderful and dedicated people who just want to lend a hand to make life a little easier for people in need.

I've begun the long process of obtaining a long-term care policy. A nurse came today to check me out and asked lots of questions about my health, needs, in addition to weighing me, taking my blood pressure, and even checking my actual height against what I had indicated. I guess they are looking for shrinkage! I was doing great up until she gave me a short-term memory test which was comprised of ten words to use in a sentence! Ten minutes later, she asked me to list the ten words! Yikes! My mind went blank and I could only come up with 4! In addition to being embarrassed, I felt depressed! We laugh about forgetting things, but when it counts, it isn't a laughing matter any more! Have you noticed changes in your short-term memory?

My Neighbor Harry's Nightmare

Harry is 87 and his wife is 81. They have been married over 30 years. His wife had a by a previous marriage who was 60 years old. Harry wasn't particularly fond of him and apparently had good reason.
The suffered a fatal heart attack last month. Harry and his wife traveled to Idaho were the was operating a hotel to attend to the funeral arrangements. Shortly after their return, Harry learned that his wife, without his knowledge, took out two credit cards and added her to the accounts. She also opened a P.O. box in her name, where the statements were send without Harry's knowledge. To date, Harry has received statements which indicate that the had charged $40,000 on the cards.
Now, my question is, since the did not have funds to cover these charges, is Harry responsible for payment, and how does he maintain a loving relationship with a wife who went behind his back?

To All My Democrat Friends: Please accept with no obligation, implied or explicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2009, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere . Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee. To My Republican Friends: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

With the advent of the computer and text messaging through cell phones, handwritten letters, journals and rought drafts - expressions free from technological interference, fresh and revealing in their imperfections - are going to become rare in the future. Are we taking our personal history for granted and will we be satisfied in the future finding stored boxes of computer print outs instead of personalized written documents.

After nines years confined in a convalescent hospital for aides related illnesses, my best friend's 40 year old , Joe, died yesterday. His mom is still in shock, as Joe had been so close to the abyss many, many times but had somehow always pulled through.
They say that the worst death is that of a before that of a parent. If you were to ask my friend, she's confirm that to be true. She thought that she'd accept his passing, with little personal pain, knowing that he was finally out of his long drawn out misery... but, little did she know! How does one cope and... accept?

Goodbye Ev

I moved into a 55+ complex approx. a year ago and have met some very nice neighbors. One in particular was an 81 year old women named Ev. After a few conversations with her, I realized that she was a strong woman with lots of spunk, sparkle and zest for life and I immensely enjoyed her company. She died two days ago, rather unexpectedly.
Some of us chose not to make new acquaintances because like Ev, they may be short lived and you find that you've invested your emotions into the relationship, but in the long run, it's well worth the time you have been given, whether long or short, to spend some quality time making a wonderful friend.

Last Friday night I went to see Johnny Mathis in concert and let me tell you, some of the songs (Twelfth of Never, A Certain Smile, Chances Are, It's Not for Me to Say) made me weep! I wonder how many of you feel the same way and does his music take you back to another time and place that brings back such wonderful memories, or maybe you don't have to go back!

I think many of us have gotten off track when it comes to posting our blogs. Least we forget, and according to SFF, who provided the description:
Blogs are a simple way to create your own regularly updated homepage on Senior FriendFinder about your life. They're a great way to find out more about other members and to tell people more about yourself and your real life experiences with people you've met on Senior FriendFinder!
