I posted this picture a couple of years ago and thought I'd share it again as a reminder of spring to come. I cut back my roses in December and they are beginning to bud! Crazy SoCal weather!

Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s Day and next month, Abraham Lincoln, my selection for the letter "L." I took this picture in October, while on a trip to Washington D.C.

Amazing Grace

My neighbor, Grace, is a 90 year old lady, originally from Scotland, and who has never married. She came to California with her sister, when they were very young. Her sister passed away 10 years ago. She has a distant cousin who lives in Illinois, other than that, she has no living relatives in the U.S.

Grace usually takes a bus to the local senior citizens center for lunch every day, and until lately, used that mode of transportation for doctor visits, shopping, etc. The exception would be that I took her to the tax man every year and recently to doctor visits.

Grace's memory is rapidly beginning to fail and soon her cousin will have to make life-changing decisions for her. I hate to see this happening, as Grace is independent, loves her freedom, walks miles each day, and to my amazement, doesn't take any prescription drugs, not one.

You may know of people similar to Grace who were or are in this situation.

PASTOR FLUFF

The Reverend John Fluff was the pastor in a small town in Ireland.

One day he was walking down the high street when he noticed a young
lady of his congregation sitting in a pub drinking beer.

The Reverend wasn't happy! He walked through the open door of the Pub
and sat down next to the woman.

"Miss Fitzgerald," he said sternly - "This is no place for a member of
my congregation. Why don't you let me take you home?"

"Sure!" she said with a slur, obviously very drunk.

When Miss Fitzgerald stood up from the bar, she began to weave back and forth.

The Reverend realized that she'd had far too much to drink and grabbed
her arms to steady her.

When he did, they both lost their balance and tumbled to the floor.

After a few moments, the Reverend wound up on top of Miss Fitzgerald,
her skirt hiked up to her waist.

The pub landlord looked over and said, "Oy mate, we won't have any of
that carrying on in this pub."

The Reverend looked up at the landlord and said, "But you don't
understand. I'm Pastor Fluff."

The landlord said, "Ah well, if you're that far in, ye might as well finish."

Land of our Ancestors

I recently read a story in the AARP magazine about a man who finds out on his mother's dying bed that the father he thought he had was really not his biological dad. The man who was his father was a family friend. His real father was Irish and ironically, by the time he was a teenage, he had fallen hard for all things Irish, telling friends he wasn't even Irish! His first trip after college was to Ireland. he later went on to spent a year in Galway.

The article goes on to say that "there are studies out that suggest we're all born with genetic memories - that we move through time carrying the experiences and cultures of our ancestors." I am half Irish and I know from my own experience that the three times I visited Ireland, I felt very familiar and actually felt at home. I have friends and family who experienced the same feelings.

Have you had a similar feeling visiting the country(ies) of your ancestors?

Recently my grandaughter, Katie, married her fiance, Vincent, who is a sargeant in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Bragg, in North Carolina. Vince has less than a year left, and when he has completed his duty, they will settle in Southern California. I couldn't be happier!

Bill Clinton should be appointed "Secretary of Explaining Things"

In President Obama's speech yesterday, he jokingly mention that someone suggested to him that he should consider appointing Bill Clinton as "Secretary of Explaining Things" for his ability to clearly explain political matters in terms that most people can understand.

Last night, Piers Morgan interviewed Bill Clinton on a number of current issues, including Iran's political views and their capability of developing a nuclear weapon, Israel, and the kicker, that the president of Iran questions whether or not there was a Holocaust!

Another topic they discussed, was Clinton's ability to become President of France, inasmuch as he was born in a state that was covered by the "Louisiana Purchase." He also could become president of Ireland because of his Irish heritage. Not that he is considering either, but it was interesting to note the possibility.

Yesterday morning my called to tell me that he had received an email from me stating that I was stranded in Cyprus and had had my money and credit cards stolen and needed immediately to have him call me and arrange to send me $2500! Apparently, he wasn't the only one to receive this message but everyone on my contact list!

When I went into my email account, everything but incoming emails was in Arabic! I tried to reset the language to English without success. I typed, "How to reset Arabic to English" into "Bing" and was surprised at the number of people who had this happen to them. Several gave explicit instructions on how to reset the language and finally I was able to get back to English.

My advice to everyone would be to make a copy of your contact list, as the culprit somehow transferred my complete list and left me with zilch!

My and her husband have fallen on hard times. They live in the high desert of SoCal and out of necessity, are moving in with her inlaws, who also live in the high desert. Neither have jobs and due to a hand injury, my hasn't worked for over two years. My -in-law hasn't worked for over 3 months as he is in constant pain due to both hips needing replacements. Neither have health insurance.

I recently suggested that they move in with me for awhile as I think it would be easier for my to find work, now that her hand is better.

My concern is that I live in a small house and have been an empty nester for 15 years. I've never had a good relationship with my and have tried to change that over the last year.

I really could use some coping tips on how to get through this trying time.
