During WWII, a way to burn down cities made largely of wood were studied. One of the interesting ones was dropping bats on the target, with and incendiary device attached. Side note: this was how napalm was developed.

Eventually, bats were discarded and "normal" incendiary bombs were dropped on Tokyo in 1945. Estimated 0,000 dead and a million homeless. So much for history.
