Not sure I understand ...

Not sure I understand why someone can curate a list of members he deems "hot" but if I'm on his list I can't see who he is. There's something a little uncomfortable about that. I mean ... What if I didn't want to be on his list? What if I wanted to block him? Can't do that if I don't know who he is.

I purchased a handmade silk shawl as a Christmas present for my . The seller is online and a true artisan judging from the many beautiful items she has listed for sale. She was kind enough to gift wrap my purchase before shipping it to me. This is a photo of the wrapped package. The decoration on the package is handmade and looking at it up close you can tell that great care was taken in crafting all of the little pieces. I'm just wondering what it is! What do you see?

Not your average morning at the beach

Today is a gray day. Not at all a beach day. But even on a day such as today I can appreciate the beauty of the shoreline. Typically off season when I pull into the parking lot at a local beach it's pretty empty but lately I've had lots of company gazing out over the water. This photo is from a couple of days ago when the surf was high and the wind surfers were out en force. This beach has a parking lot that runs parallel to the shoreline so its a perfect place to park if you like to watch waves and sea birds. Most people like to park right up front, overlooking the water. The parking lot often resembles a drive-in theater with the ocean as the entertainment!

Cars come and go and I usually don't pay much attention but this morning a car caught my attention because of how slowly it was approaching the beach. The driver pulled into an accessible parking space and he and his passenger got out and headed toward the sand. His passenger was using a cane and I thought how brave she was to choose to walk on an uneven surface. I know from experience that walking on sand can be challenging and I admit to worrying a little bit about her safety but I figured she knew her limitations. The couple made their way slowly over to a shallow inlet, and unwittingly became the subject of the “drive-in” as they were directly in front of the row of parked cars.

The male half of the couple poured something out of a cup he was carrying. The environmentalist in me hoped it was water and not coffee or soda. He poured more. Then more, as droplets sprayed all around. It wasn't until his second or third pouring action that it occurred to me he could not have been pouring liquid. Today was not that windy, and had he been pouring liquid it would have gone straight down. This was not liquid. It was dust.

My emotions got the best of me as I watched the couple scatter the remaining ashes. I had never been involved in or even watched a casting before and wasn't prepared for the feelings it evoked. Part of me wanted to drive away. The other part of me recognized that even though it wasn't my intention, I became a participant in a ceremony that was clearly meaningful to this couple. The respectful thing to do would be to stay.

Some minutes later they made their way back to their car. Soon after, they pulled out of the parking lot as slowly as they had approached. Their out of state license plate suggested that they had come from quite a distance to say goodbye to their loved one. Why did they choose this beach? Who was their loved one? I will never know their story.

Took a little detour

This morning I was on my way to the local coffee shop when I noticed pretty sunrise colors. You know how much I love taking sunrise photos! Of course I had to take a little detour to Nantucket Sound. For those not familiar with the area, Nantucket Sound is the body of water off the coast of Massachusetts between Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. A few minutes later I was gazing out over the sound at a sunrise that became more beautiful with every passing minute!

The view from my window today

Are we still doing “view from my window today” photography? Here are a couple of photos from my window. Well, it's my car window and not the window of my home but that counts, right?!

When I need a little break my favorite thing to do is drive to one of the local beaches. Many, like the one I drove to today, have beach views from the parking lot. I took these photos from my car. My driver's side window had a close up view of bees buzzing around wildflowers. And the view through the windshield is of Cape Cod Bay.

It was very peaceful with crickets chirping and people fishing. My kind of morning!

Last week I danced. Doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary for a dance teacher, right? It's true .. as an instructor I dance almost every day but this was different.

When it comes to social dancing there are many ways to enjoy it and in my thirty plus years in the industry it has always been a pleasure to get out there on the dance floor regardless of the type of music or the skill of my dance partner. But if I may digress and take a quick walk down memory lane, my favorite experiences happened about twenty years ago when I studied and practiced regularly with the same partner. I looked forward to each and every session. I loved the feeling of accomplishment and can't deny that the positive feedback on our dancing was a motivating factor. When he moved away it felt as if my whole world collapsed and in the twenty years since, I haven't found a way to be at peace with the void. Yes, I dance almost every day. No, there has never been any comparison to the level, precision, and exhilaration of those days long ago.

Until last week. It was an average sort of day, running a monthly dance party. A new guest walked in, greeted me, and then worked his way around the floor dancing with various partners. I was impressed as I looked on. He seemed quite accomplished. Then he took me up on my offer to “save me a dance” and I felt as if I had just stepped into a time capsule. I relived the precision, joy, partnership, and level of challenge that I felt so many years ago.

The dance party ended and I knew this feeling of exhilaration would be short lived. Living in a vacation destination you get used to the idea of people entering and exiting your life in two-week blocks of time. This would be no different.

But at least I can be happy that ….

Last week I danced.

I ran an errand this morning and as I was getting out of the car I noticed one lone rose on a massive vine. Snapped a photo through my car window. So there ya go! That's the view from my window today.

They say, "Dance like no one is watching.". I've seen this saying over the years and always thought of it as good advice. Today on social media I saw an updated version: "Dance like no one is watching because they're not. They're checking their phones.".

Probably true in many cases!

Occasionally I like to nap and because my condo faces the woods I don't always close the drapes. Imagine my surprise when I woke up from a pleasant little nap to this view from my window!

I took this photo to submit to condo management along with a request to be notified prior to exterior maintenance that requires a worker to climb past a window. Then I laughed as I thought of how fitting it was for our current photo theme.

A funny typo to start your day

This morning I was searching online for some new line dances to teach my classes. When I find one that seems interesting I'll review the step sheet which explains all of the steps in the dance in detail. One in particular caught my attention. It's done with two lines facing each other, and at a certain point in the dance the two lines cross and as they are passing by they raise their hands and clap the hands of the dancers coming toward them. But ... There was a typo in the step sheet and instead of "clap each other's hands" it said "lap each other's hands"! I'm still giggling!
