FIRST ON FOX: A Peach State lawmaker who angered her Democratic colleagues in the Georgia state House of Representatives over her support for a recent school choice bill is expected to announce that she is officially switching parties.
Mesha Mainor – a Democrat who has represented District 56 in the Georgia state House since January 2021 – will announce shortly before noon Tuesday that she will switch her party registration to Republican.
"When I decided to stand up on behalf of disadvantaged in support of school choice, my Democrat colleagues didn’t stand by me," Mainor explained of her decision in a statement to Fox News Digital. "They crucified me. When I decided to stand up in support of safe communities and refused to support efforts to defund the police, they didn’t back me. They abandoned me."
"For far too long, the Democrat Party has gotten away with using and abusing the black community," she added. "For decades, the Democrat Party has received the support of more than 90% of the black community. And what do we have to show for it? I represent a solidly blue district in the city of Atlanta. This isn’t a political decision for me. It’s a moral one."
Mainor made clear that her work across party lines will continue after she switches parties, saying she has "never hesitated to work across the aisle to deliver results for my community and the people I was elected to represent. And that won't change."
Mainor said that she has "been met with much encouragement" amid her decision to switch parties and noted that it's "humbling to be embraced – for the first time in a long time – by individuals who don’t find fault in a black woman having a mind of her own and be willing to buck the party line."
Asked whether she believes she will face pushback from Democrats over her decision, Mainor said, "The most dangerous thing to the Democrat Party is a black person with a mind of their own. So, it wouldn’t surprise me."
As for her priorities after switching parties, Mainor said she will continue to focus on education and expanding the Republican majority in the House.
"Education and the importance of school choice has been – and will continue to be – a key focus of mine," she said. "But outside of education, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Georgia General Assembly to tackle the most pressing issues facing our state and to help grow the Republican Party, helping us not focus not just on preaching to the choir but growing the congregation."
In a video shared to social media in May, Mainor accused Democrats of turning against her for being a staunch school choice advocate.
"I support school choice, parent rights and opportunities for to thrive, especially those that are marginalized and tend to fail in school," Mainor said at the time. "The Democrats at the [Georgia State] Capitol took a hard position and demanded every Democrat vote against and for the teachers union. I voted yes for parents and yes for not failing schools."

Joe Biden’s race to embrace electric vehicles risks overwhelming US charging infrastructure and creating disastrous supply shortages, two of the world’s biggest carmakers have said.
Toyota and Vauxhall owner Stellantis accused the President of being “overly optimistic” in his push for a rule that would require two thirds of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2032.
The companies were quick to point out that they support a move to low-emissions vehicles and electric cars in particular but warned that they need customers to buy them and that costs are still too high for the mass market.
The cars typically cost about £10,000 more than comparable petrol-burning versions, with many drivers able to recoup the difference through cheaper charging over the life of the vehicle.
Toyota warned the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that there would also be a rush to secure lithium and other minerals needed to make battery-powered cars if the plans went ahead.
Toyota said: “The proposed rule underestimates key challenges including the scarcity of minerals to make batteries, the fact that these minerals are not mined or refined in the US, the inadequate infrastructure, and the high cost of [battery electric vehicles].”
Stellantis, which owns Vauchall, Fiat and Chrysler among other brands, said: “The proposed rule significantly underestimates the actions needed to build the targeted EV market.
“Addressing concerns such as manufacturing capacity, battery production, charging infrastructure, and consumer acceptance of EVs will be paramount to the success of this ambitious proposed regulation.”
The reticence from Toyota and Stellantis is at odds with Tesla, which only makes battery-powered cars and is one of the largest producers.
It said the EPA could even increase its targets based on “the rapid pace of light-duty vehicle electrification”.
The Texas-based company, led by billionaire Elon Musk, said that the technology has “been amply demonstrated, is being rapidly deployed, and has significantly decreasing competitive costs”, Bloomberg reported.
It comes after Toyota, which is the world’s largest carmaker by number of vehicles sold, last week hailed a technological breakthrough in electric car batteries that it claimed will halve their cost, size and weight

President Trump got a huge show of support from law enforcement at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday.
President Trump attended the UFC 290 event in Las Vegas following his packed rally earlier in the day at the Calvary Church.
Trump was seen at the event with Dana White, Joe Rogan, Mel Gibson, Roger Stone, and Mark Wahlberg who spoke with him during a break.
Law enforcement surrounded Trump while he was getting ready to depart LAX.
Officers eagerly took selfies and shook hands with Trump.
Trump made sure to shake as many hands as possible and thank the police officers for their service to the community.
