~~~~~~~~~~~~A Taste Of Home~~~~~~~~~~ Once or twice a year I go online shopping the International Food Shop for German products that I don't find at our local markets. It's a little taste of home, especially now with the ban due to the virus. Many products are of stock as the never ending lockdown in almost all European countries forced factories to stop production, and international supply chains are interrupted as well. My foray was smaller than usual. Last week the order was delivered..... Hurrah! Meanwhile I found a 2nd online shop for German food that still had German potato dumplings in stock. I ordered 3 different kinds, each carton contains 6 dumplings. Expected delivery March, 2nd. The pictures show canned herring fillets in different sauces, curry ketchup, and Pflaumenmus (plum spread). Also an image of a dumpling carton, hearty meals: "Sauerbraten" with potato dumplings, pork knuckle........ and German beer. There are breweries all over the country...... north, east, west and south. LOL I am not a fan of beer, I have to admit. If anybody would like to know how to make the original potato dumplings from scratch, I have the recipe. Happiness is when what you think, what you say, what you do are in harmony - M. Gandhi |
Wow MySeek..that is quite an array of German food. When Expo 86 was here in Vancouver I used to go to the German Beer gardens. It was a great place to go to. Lots of beer and food. At one time we used to have October Fest but that disappeared because it became too rowdy. There is a European food store in my neighbourhood. Once in awhile I stop in there and pick up some cheese or meat. There are a number of ethnic groups represented in that store.
It is amazing what we can order online these days.... well, before the pandemic slowed everything down. I'm not familiar with many German dishes, although my grandmother's grandmother was from Germany and raised her and helped her raise her family until she died. Sauerkraut and potato pancakes are the two most common things I remember. I think the potato pancakes might be similar to the potato dumplings. Joe introduced me to the Italian food, gnocchi. His mother made it from scratch, but I've never tried doing it. Occasionally, I buy it for him in a vacuum sealed bag, but I don't fix it often because I don't really care for it myself. Did you ever do pork chops and sauerkraut? My mother made the BEST! She fried the pork chops as usual, added the sauerkraut on top of it, put a lid on the cast iron skillet, turned the heat down and let it simmer for an hour or so. The meat was sooooo tender and delicious, and the kraut had lost some of it sourness from the grease from the porkchops. MMMMM Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
Lovely selection of canned foods there , very tasty looking. Great for an emergency . Not a beer lover either. I used to enjoy the odd shandy at one time, now I just drink white wine
Pat I make scalloped potatoes and ham together. I layer the potatoes and the ham and bake it in the oven. I put apples in sauerkraut to get rid of the tartness. I also add some onion to it as well. The sauerkraut you buy in the grocery store can be quite acidic. It certainly doesn't taste quite the same as what my mother used to make. Our sauerkraut was made in a crock and the cabbage was stomped with a wooden stomper. It was made in the fall when we had an abundance of fresh cabbage from the garden. We would eat that all winter long. Happiness is when what you think, what you say, what you do are in harmony - M. Gandhi
Isn't it interesting how we have similar dishes, but quite different at the same time? Our potato pancakes were made with mashed potatoes, often left over from another meal. An egg was beaten in, and a bit of flour if needed, then fried. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
