She looks angry. He looks like he's sitting on a toilet and things are not going too well. All it lacks is a roll of toilet paper made from The Constitution.

I thought both portraits looked like a joke...... If I had seen the one of Michelle in another setting and did not know who it was supposed to be, I would not know it was her, just someone who resembled her. It has a stony look with no life to it.... a generic black woman with no personality.
Obama's likeness was some better, but the background is laughable. It looks like he is floating in a chair in an almost 3D atmosphere of green leaves. I did not find it to be presidential at all. I went back and looked at several Smithsonian portraits from the past, and with a few exceptions, they had a more dignified look, whether formal or casual.
I wonder what they really thought about them.

I used to post examples of amazing art on this site.....works done by painters that are considered some of best that America has ever produced......and you always made derogatory comments on anything that was not completely mundane photo-realism. I wonder why it's always those who are the most ignorant about art that are the most willing to opine.

Perhaps art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. But these are not just art for art's sake, they are portraits of the POTUS and First Lady. Should they not look like her and him, and show dignity instead of artist license?
The painting of her would be good, IF it were not supposed to be her, just a generic black lady in a white dress.
BTW..... what is your opinion of the portraits?

Oh,, and did I make derogatory remarks, or simply say I did not like them or they are not my "cup of tea"?

I loved both paintings but think they would be better suited for the Obamas' living room and not their official portraits as President and First Lady. In Barack's portrait it looks like he's sitting on a toilet and his hands look twice the size of hands. Michelle's portrait doesn't even look like her at all but I love the dress.

I am not an artist but I know what I like and I do not like either of the portraits.
I also think they should be displayed with all the other portraits of past Presidents and First Ladies. Walk down a line of stoic painting after stoic painting of people who you are able to see who look like they did in real life, and just as you are about to yawn and say enough is enough, you see these two paintings and laugh your ass off. What a great stress reliever it will be.

Then you would have to agree that this portrait definitely does not do her justice, and in fact is a derogatory statement about her? Because it doesn't look like her..... just a woman who resembles her. That is the topic of the blog, not the beauty or characteristics of Michelle.

It's my understanding both these black artists were selected by the Obama's. If you look at other painting by the artists you can see their styles of how they represent people. No surprises. Kehinde Wiley has busy, flowered, wall paper looking backgrounds and Amy Sherald paints black people in shades of grays, very flat, simplistic paintings. I am sure the Obama's knew they would not be getting the "old masters" looking works of art.

The more I look at the rendition of Michelle Obama the more I like it. Calming, graceful and extremely different than previous paintings of First Ladies. I'd say the paintings are fitting of the first Black couple to occupy the White House. Art is subjective, not everyone likes the same things.
