An Innovative Greengrocer

The photo below features a unique vegetable shop located on a tall tree trunk by the roadside of a small town in my home country. This shop, known as Super Shop, caters to shoppers who prefer to buy fresh vegetables daily. The owner, an elderly man, has spent most of his life abroad. The tree itself is over one hundred years old and has a substantial diameter.

In our city, fresh vegetables and fruits are rarely available in the chain stores near our homes. Most of the vegetables found in those stores are not fresh at all. Unfortunately, we don't have a farmers' market to provide better options. Fresh vegetables are indeed the best choice for our health. I hope you are doing well. Take care and stay cheerful.

Your post reminds me of my childhood when I lived in a town where my father and I would go to the farmers' market twice a week to buy fresh vegetables and fruits. Back then, there were no chain superstores anywhere in the country. Those days will never return! Stay happy, Star.

Our supermarkets are pretty good at fresh veggies and fruits, and stands that in front of some of the Amish homes have fresh garden produce.
The last "farmer's market" that Joe and I shopped, actually had boxed produce brought in from far away and was not of good quality at all.
In my younger years, we raised a huge garden to can and freeze produce for the winter, and also sold the extra.

CH, your post above has taken me back to the years when my dad was obliged to send us to our ancestral rural home for our safety soon after the invading Japanese Armed Forces reached Kohima, driving away the Britishers from Burma. We had to live for two and a half years in our village home before going back to the city where we used to live before World War II. It was then that I saw how vegetables were grown in our home gardens. I used to accompany our chief domestic help twice every week to buy groceries from a nearby Village Farmers Market. Such facilities still exist in the rural areas of our country. It was when we always consumed fresh vegetables and fruits, as frozen foods were not readily available then. Take care of yourself, CH. Stay happy.

Archer, perhaps this unique style vegetable and fruit stand will not be found in any other town or place in this country. Local authorities are also not likely to allow anyone to erect such stands on tree trunks in other towns or places. I could not buy any product from this stand. The town where this stand is located is far from Dhaka city, where I live. I have posted another photo of the stand for you to view. Be safe, my friend.

MrsJoe, Thanks for your post. As the supermarkets in our country procure vegetables from different parts of the country, they can not offer fresh products to their customers. But rural vegetables and fruit stands are different. They usually sell local produce mostly. I hope you are doing fine. Stay cheerful always. Have a pleasant time.

After returning home from abroad, this man discovered himself almost penniless and had to find a way to survive honestly. He appears to be a lucky person. The local authorities allowed him to build his vegetable sales counter on this tall tree trunk as a special case.
Take care of yourself, dear Maudie. Be safe.

Shartaun, I always feel happy to read your posts here. Many trees like this can be found along the roadsides in our towns and cities. This particular tree is called the "Korai Tree" in Bengali. These trees are primarily planted along the roads to provide shade for pedestrians. I hope you are doing well. Take care. Be safe.
