Response to "Dissin the US"

I read Maisie's blog with an open mind. Apparently my open mind was not a characteristic Maisie employed as she wrote her blog. Her blog which provided a jaundiced view of the situation involving deteriorating US Philippine relations was really primarily another hit job on our current President.

I believe I have a more objective viewpoint to present because my wife is Filipina. We have followed the situation in the Philippines not only from media sources but also from friends and relatives we have in the Philippines.

Duterte was a former mayor of Davao. He had been mayor for twenty two years. During his terms as mayor several things should be noted. He was mayor when an Australian woman was kidnapped and murdered. He also was mayor when he encouraged extrajudicial murder in Davao. Extrajudicial murder is what occurs when people are not investigated, indicted or afforded a trial under current Philippine national law.

Nevertheless, in spite of his history, Duterte ran for President and won the election...some would say under the cloud of election fraud.

Immediately upon his election he began his practice of advocating for extrajudicial murder of suspected drug trafficers. He exhorted citizens to murder those "suspected" of illegal drug activity.

The result was in excess of 3,000 murders within the first two months. People were being shot down in the streets. When the world community became aware of what was happening the outrage was uniform and strong. The extrajudicial murders occurring in the Philippines are as much a tragedy, albeit smaller in scale, than the human tragedy in Aleppo.

Duterte, much like Donald Trump, is an egotist who does not accept criticism. He started a war of words; first with the US Ambassador Goldberg and later with President Obama. He fought with the Pope and he fought with others. He said some terrible things to the President. Obama sought to diffuse the discord.

Some compare Duterte to Donald Trump...thankfully we have not yet experienced what a Trump Presidency would be...but at this juncture Duterte is worse.

The Philippines can not, under current treaties, divorce itself from the US...no matter what Duterte or Maisie contend.

This is the truth of the matter in Philippine US relations. I did not need or try to denigrate our President because to do so really is not germaine to the discussion of US Philippine relations.

It would be nice if, in her attempt to denigrate President Obama, she would avail herself of a more objective discussion about a single topic. Unfortunately;, it seems that her hatred of one of our most popular Presidents knows no bounds. Surely she does not advocate extrajudicial murder...but then we would would not know it judging from her blog.

I had read about the killing of suspected drug dealers there without due process.

What a good way to get rid of someone you don't like...nosy neighbour? business competitor? nasty relative?

Every time I heard of something Duterte did or said I was wondering how you and Betty felt. If he's so against President Obama and the U.S. and as he says he wants to align his country with China and Russia, then I hope the U.S. cancels all foreign aid to the Philippines immediately. I don't see why the U.S. taxpayers have to foot the bill anymore under the circumstances. I feel sorry for the Philippine people to have a leader like that, but they elected him and they cheer every word he says. To me he is a despicable tyrant who murders his own people, and is no different than any other power hungry tyrannical leader in the world.
