The Travesty of Public Schools......Dumb down the . .....This morning while surfing the inter-net I read an interesting article about Public (government) Schools. Teachers are now told that for the sake of "fairness" do not ask the in class to raise their hands when they know an answer to a question. Instead call on a individually to answer questions posed to the class. After all little Johnny who sits in the back and is very shy never gets to participate in responding to questions...... My eldest boy has a very bright who is also extremely competitive. He plays sports with a desire to always win. Losing is unacceptable in his eyes. 2nd place he feels is the same as last place. He carries this approach to the classroom and academics as well. Some time ago he related a story to me about how he was called to a parent-teacher conference regarding his 's performance in the 2nd grade at school. He was told that his was disrupting the class and causing trouble and that he, My , was directed to discipline his accordingly to correct the disruptive behavior. Seems like whenever a question was asked his was the first to raise his hand almost every time. Well soon the teacher, wanting to give other students a chance,"fairness", started to call on other students. My 's in response, was as soon as the teacher asked a question, he would blurt out the answer. The teacher could not call on a of her choosing. This was deemed a disruptive behavior. How as a parent can you discipline a such as this. How do you tell a to squelch his competitive instinct? What do you say? " I know your an achiever but thats not a good thing you must behave as though your as dumb as everyone else. Don't study so hard and read all that you can. Depress the energy and desire you have to learn new things. Be average so you will get along and make the teacher and everyone else happy." This is one more example of how Public (Government) Schools dumbs down our . They want all students to act as one not individuals. After all everyone is supposed to be equal. Lets not hurt anyones "feelings"..... Lets face it in life there are winners and there are losers. There are achievers and under-achievers, not so according to public (government) schools. Expecting a child to respect his classmates or his teacher's request is not dumbing down, it has to do with just what she said, whether she's any good as a teacher or not. She asked him to allow other students to participate, he refused, that is what is called 'willful disobedience'. I agree with the person who said that your grandson's needs are not being met and Lizzy's that it is the responsibility of the teacher to see that he is sufficiently challenged such that his academic needs are met as are the learning styles of his classmates taken into consideration. The academic component is one thing and the behavior is another. It's pretty easy to backseat drive what should or shouldn't be done when you're not the one doing it.

Agedverywell, Gimme a break the child was in the 2nd grade not a college sophomore. and you still didn't answer the question. How do you tell a child at that impressionable age to be dumb? Well he is now a freshman in High School plays football and Varsity Baseball. Carries a 3.85 average and still believes that a B is a failing grade. For a kid that is that un-healthy as you so aptly put it, I rest my case. Lizzy.... Your not getting my point How do you tell the child to be dumb? How do you tell him not to acheive?. As far as the other children in the class they will find out at the end of the grading period how well the did or didnt do. Be kind to others be considerate? Thats all well and good but dont tell him to be dumb.....At least the school's in SA teach and require dress codes and encourage achievement, not squelch it in the name of "fairness". The poets pen ..... Call it what you may but you called it wrong. Its dumbing the achiever for the sake of under-achievers. Hi 60minuteman, Please consider AgedVeryWell's advice!!! Also, I think that, on the whole, young children today are much more knowledgeable for their age than we were. Take care!!
