A School Lunch YOU actually enjoyed

I went to an all boys High School and most days brought a lunch from home. Always made my own lunch, with mothers suggestion of course.
The school cafeteria was managed by a wonderful little old lady named Mrs Miller. It was a huge room with no windows and was nicknamed Millers Cave. The menu was standard and had a daily special. On Thursdays I think it was meat loaf with mashed potatoes, corn and a most fantastic thick gravy that was to die for. The cafeteria was always packed the day meat loaf was on the menu and if you did not get there early you lost out. I mean it was sooooo good it was addicting. I have never had meat loaf like it since then. Every time I have meat loaf, even now, I think of Mrs Miller and Millers cave. Never liked that rubber stuff they called Jello though.
Did you have a favorite school lunch?

When I was in the second grade, our school burned and we had to go to a nearby town, where the gym was partitioned off for our first and second grades. I didn't have a favorite meal, but I loved it when they put out big bowls of canned grapefruit sections and we could have as much as we wanted. That was a real treat because not everyone liked them, so that left more for those of us who did.

Hi mrsjoe, not to many kids were fond of grapefruit so I guess you were safe there lol. I enjoyed the occasional orange as a treat.

At no time during my school days did I not bring a lunch from home.

In elementary school, we had an hour and a half for lunch so everyone was sent home (or to wherever their parents had arranged for them to go) for lunch.

In high school although there was a cafeteria, most brought a lunch from home.

Years later when my daughter was in elementary school, lunch time was 40 minutes and everyone brought a lunch from home... no cafeteria but you could buy milk.

I don't remember School Lunches in Elementary School except when I worked in the cafeteria for them. I never felt shamed like some in more recent times said children working for their lunch should be.. I felt accomplished. My siblings and I had lunch pails and usually had PJ sandwiches.

By the time I reached Junior High - I was able to earn my own money - First Job - Shoveling up horse manure. I also babysat. Fifty cents an hour. Lunch in Junior High and High School were served concession style. My favorite in High School was hot chocolate and a honey bun.

Back then employees in the lunch room cooked. They did not brown and serve or dump food out of a sealed plastic bag on to your plate.

Hi Dinty: Isn't it interesting that after all these years we remember vividly the little things like what we had at school for lunch. My parents owned a restaurant which was a block away from the high school I went to, so I went home for lunch. I could have eaten whatever I wanted to, but all I ever wanted for lunch was a raw potato and a Crispy Crunch chocolate bar. lol
