Latest news from Anne and Alfie's brings a question to mind. When I was but a lad with 4 brothers and three sisters, we lived out in the country. The outhouse had one hole. Never seen a line up waiting to get in. Then there came a time for a new location for that little shack out back. A new outhouse was erected and was quite up to date with a candle/ashtray shelf AND two holes. I never seen two people in the outhouse at the same time, soooo why the two holes? Would it have been better to build a divided outhouse? Did you ever see two people in it at the same time? Was boy/boy, girl/girl or boy/girl or girl/boy. Or was it when one side piled up real high, you went to the other hole? Just ask'n. |

My standard of living actually dropped in one respect when we left the DP camps in Germany in 1949 for Canada. In Germany we had indoor plumbing with flush toilets. In Orillia, ON, we used an outhouse.

I remember going to summer amp when I was around 10. It had outhouses with about 6 holes, one for the boys and 1 for girls. I seem to remember several kids being in there at a time. Kind of like the open showers in some locker rooms. Spiritwoman ^i^

I can only answer for us personally Dinty, but I can assure you the only reason I don't use the other hole is that if I did I'd fall right through it and they would most likely never find me again!!! Alfie...
