Shoe stores and Randy Newman's "Short People" song attitude.

I can understand marketing techniques like having sale items at eye level and impulse buy end caps and shelves by the cash register, but why do shoe stores and or shoe departments always have the smaller size shoes on the top shelf?

I was looking for a pair of knock-around shoes at wally world and the size I wear are just one shelf higher than me. The large sizes like size 10 and up are on the bottom shelf.

Tall people tend to have larger feet where as shorter people tend to have smaller feet. Soooo, is it not easier for tall people to bend over and reach items like shoes lower down than it is for shorter people to jump up or stand on things to reach items above eye level?

What is the marketing idea behind that? Does starwoman or anyone else know?

I've noticed this many times Dinty, but I never really thought about it until I read your blog. It makes sense to me to change them round and have them stacked the other way.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

I shop the outlet type shoe stores and they have shelves no higher than oh, 4 feet...I think that is so their spy cams can work better.
I guess that makes them equal-opportunity dizzy heads as all have to bend over to look for any size.

Wow, they will be eye level for mrsdinty....no, just kidding, she is taller than that.

Interesting - I never notices but I usually shop for shoes in factor outlets since I live near them. Most of the stock, other than the display items, are in boxes and almost always down low.

Now you have me interested, I will have to visit the shoe factory outlet in our mall and have a look around.

Well... Don't know about the marketing angle. But in earthquake country the smaller shoes wouldn't hurt as bad hitting the noggin coming off the top shelves.

I actually never noticed that phenomenon. In my minds eye. I seemed to bend over for the samller men's tennies at Wallys. And in the boot store sizes seemed to go horizontally. But then my minds eye made need glasses.

Wow!!!! You're very right!!! They do that with the women's shoes too.

How strange is that!!!!

Yup I know Rocket. Mrsdinty is smaller than I am, so I have to lift her up to see the shoes her size.....lol.....just kidding, but I do reach items on the taller shelves for her when we go shopping.
