Where is the US military?

A Canadian RCAF C-17 took off from Katmandu a couple of days ago with 96 people on board.

38 of them were Americans.

I wonder what the story behind that is.

The US has a lot of military assets in that part of the world, so why were not those used to get American citizens out of the earthquake zone?

I mean, we're, like, always totally glad to help out the neighbours as we did during the hostage incident in Tehran. But in this case one would think that the neighbour was more than self sufficient.

Perhaps it was simply a case of scheduling.

Canadian lefties would be surprised to discover that the Glib And Male is a left wing rag.

It's been a conservative paper throughout its history.

The Toronto Star is a Liberal paper, so possibly it might qualify.

Thanks for that lovely endorsement!

I am very glad you are not going to get into a contest with me since I so fear your brilliance and wit.

It might matter to Americans to know that if they find themselves in similar circumstances they might not get any help from the US military.

Boogie:

The Canadian C-17 was not there on some joint exercise.
It was specifically flown from Ontario to deliver supplies and to bring back people.

A C-17 is not a small airplane. The US military has them as well. If a C-17 with Canada written on the side can land and take off from kathmandu, I imagine that one with USA on it could as well.

No argument there.

If there was room there was no reason not to take them

The Americans are happy.

The Canadians are miffed because it only took them to New Delhi, and not to Canada.

You are missing something.

The something is why the US military appears not be doing it.

The RCAF, as any large org, has its spin doctors.
Despite being ex-RCAF I don't trust their public announcements any more that I trust Fox News to tell me the whole story.

I would prefer hearing from the Americans who were flown out, or a reporter on the scene.

I saw in one report on the matter that the US does not evacuate its citizens out of places where commercial airlines are still operating.

The Canadian C-17 came from the RCAF base at Trenton, Ontario.

That is a very long way.

The US military has aircraft far closer.
