Nothing New Under the Sun

We all get hot and bothered about the left / right - I’m right, your wrong stuff these days. I often feel like the observer in a role playing training session because I watch it all go by and don’t get excited or involved. I often wonder why but the other day an explanation presented itself.

I was listening to the 60’s station on satellite radio on my drive to town. Good old Cousin Brucie, an icon DJ from “the day”. The guy has to be about 80. He played a song from 1965, The Eve of Destruction. I remembered it well. He followed it by one called The Dawn of Correction. I either hadn’t heard or didn’t remember that one. I’m sharing the chorus from both. Complete lyrics are easily looked up if anyone is interested.

A flash of insight – it’s 50 years later. The names have changed but the story is the same. The issues are different but the feelings, concerns and polarization are the same. Was getting so excited about things worth it? It made for some interesting times but then life happened and other things took precedence. Does anything ever change in spite of how much enthusiasm we might invest? Were we just naïve then or (at last many of us) just blasé now?

For my part it became apparent early on that it was not possible to make any kind of a difference with rhetoric or taking on the big issue so I spent my time and energy trying to make a difference on a very small scale, doing my best to live my beliefs and change what I could in my immediate environment.

Eve of Destruction
And tell me
Over and over and over and over again my friend
You don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction
Mmm, no, no, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Dawn of Correction
So over and over again, you keep sayin' it's the end
But I say you're wrong, we're just on the dawn of correction

Chuck and I were having a similar conversation earlier. The 2 kids I recently took on continue to amaze us by demonstration their complete lack of life skills. Neither he nor I remember intentionally teaching our children these things directly. We taught them by living and doing and including them rather than ignoring them.

Unfortunately there are many children currently being raised by parents who lack these skills themselves.

Wow I remember that song! In fact, that song has popped into my mind and into conversations over the years surprisingly often. I believe I was in the 7th grade when I heard it for the first time. Oddly, the song was played in school and was used to spark discussion. I do not remember that discussion of course, but, I admit that the song probably ignited a deeper consciousness of the world, and its injustice too that has stayed with me ever since. I have never been more concerned about divisiveness in society than I am today. Racist speak and attitudes disgust me and there's no excuse for it anymore. We have allowed policy that has deepened the economic divide and it is harming my children's generation in ways I'm not sure they yet comprehend. It bothers me that people complain about political correctness. Why? Political correctness is mostly appropriate. For all of the ills of society there is also a promising future. Technology has certainly made a huge difference. Bill Gates is accomplishing so much through his foundation, yet again changing the world. Although I'm not Catholic, Pope Francis has been wonderful for the world so far. I do think the vast majority of world leaders are disconnected from what is going on in the minds of Generation X and the Millennials. I saw a news clip that interviewed young people coming out of the movie Selma. Clearly they were shocked by the film. It confirmed for me that we really have made progress in race and yet, there is an excusable ignorance that I worry others are now exploiting, or will very soon. Voter suppression is one example, and the economic divide is the other. It's up to our generation to finish the race here. That's one reason I will take my own generation to task every time I see it until they grow up, get real and cope with their own demons. We are still on the 'EVE'...but the race isn't over either.
I consider it a privilege, maybe even a gift to have been alive during this time of rapid change. There are few times in history that could have provided such an exciting backdrop to have been a college student. It all seemed a perfect fit for me.

The Eastern world has been exploding since the beginning of recorded history. There were many times throughout history when the culture clash of these similar but different factions did indeed create complete destruction of the world (as they knew it). Mass communication, other scientific developments and globalization are dragging everyone into the ancient battle.

I know exactly how you feel. Even with all of my activities and projects I still feel that there is something still out there needing doing and it is larger than any of the things I can see at present. I know that when the time is right it will present itself but I do get impatient and want to get to it.

I can also relate to not wanting to just take up space. I routinely think about this and think I need to get another job. Then I remember that doing that would only subject me to working for someone elses goals. . Then I remind myself that I would be taking a job away from someone who really needs it to support their family. Volunteer work would be ideal but so far the opportunities I see here are more social than contributory. Again I know full well that the right thing will appear when the time is right but I do not like waiting, particularly at our stage in life when we realize that time is indeed limited.

He is correct but I wonder is this is not how it goes from generation to generation. Correction - errors - corrections - errors etc. OMG - that makes life sound like me trying to edit a document!

I have too many other things to do, let others take charge of changing the world.

I didn't mess it up so I won't be responsible.

Now you're starting to sound like chuck's approach. Have me take care of the stiff like reservations, arrangements etc., then he doesn't have to be responsible when they go wrong. Actually this sounds more like Alfie than you.
