012-08 Today I get to attend a Christmas Luncheon. Yes, Christmas, we’re a little late for this 16th annual luncheon..lol Back in 1990 I worked with a group of about 20 temporaries assembled to work on an accounting project to roll up 63 partnerships and take it public. Thing is, when I was first offered the job, I didn’t want to do it because a minimum 50 hour work week was required for months. My husband wasn’t too pleased I had turned the job down. So, like a good girl, I told the agency I had reconsidered and was in fact interested in taking on the assignment. Fifty hour work week was an understatement. The closer we got to getting all the moving parts put together, the longer the days became. More than once we worked all night. I had to be home by 6am so I would be there before my got up and husband left for work. Little shut eye, a shower and I was back to the trenches by 10am. It was an interesting group of people. Working those long hours we got to know a lot about each other. Jerry was an ex-marine, father of five, real estate developer who’d hit upon hard times. He told us how before coming to work in the temporary ranks, he and his wife had cut there monthly budget to the bone; all the way down to $50,000…a MONTH. Life’s not cheap when you have five in private school. There Jerry was doing the work at 15 bucks an hour. Another guy, Ben, had a second career as a print model doing magazine ads and billboards. One of Ben’s pics was plastered all over town for awhile. Ben introduced Dave to his agent. Dave was a very good looking . Next thing we knew, Dave was doing runway work in Europe. Little Jay left our ranks after he was charged with murder. Seems Jay had been drinking heavily one night with an acquaintance. The acquaintance was a Viet Nam vet with a reputation for being a violent drunk. Jay and the vet got into an altercation…one thing led to another and the vet ended up dead. Good thing for Jay the grand jury no-billed him. Floyd was a DJ turned bra assembly line worker turned administrative assistance. He would wander round the office muttering. Lots of the temps would sort of shake their heads and ignore him. But they missed one of the funniest men I have ever met. The guy was a constant source of entertainment. It really didn’t take too long before most everyone looked forward to the next muttered gem. The boss was one of the first women partners in a big six accounting firm. I can only describe her with one word, smart. The lady knew her stuff. During the project she married. Her husband was a retired partner from a big six firm. Funny how that worked…lol Witz came from a nice catholic family with six . All the were successful. She had a brother who was a sea captain, a brother attending the naval academy, a sister who married a senator’s . Witz got a full ride to SMU on a basketball scholarship. She was a wonderful lady with one unbelievable competitive edge. Anyway, the 20 something is now down to six. Once a year for the last sixteen years, we have gotten together for lunch. The camaraderie is always there. We talk about the old times, the family, the jobs, the trips, and the lives we now lead. We hug. We plan on doing it again the next year. I’m glad I listened to my husband and asked to be on that project. I got a great lunch date out of the deal. Grow old along we me. The best is yet to be. Robert Browning |
