ALiberalDemocrat'sProspectiveOnFirstLadies I have been a liberal democrat most of my life. I can have issues with the President's agenda but I have never felt the need to vilify or hiss at the First Lady no matter who she is married to. Most First Ladies have a hopefully noncontroversial "cause" to work on while their husbands are President. Still, there are those who will make it controversial simple because of who the women are married to. Michelle Obama followed the footsteps of one of her aunts who created Victory Gardens during WWII and encouraged Community Gardens in the Schools. Suddenly her husband's opponents were screaming " abuse." It is probably an oxymoron that Melania Trump chose Anti-Cyberbullying as her noncontroversial cause but at least her husband isn't tweeting insults to little . So now there is this unfair comparison between Barbara Bush and Melania Trump. They are two very different women from very different circumstances and worlds. Barbara Bush was born into privilege and walked right into a marriage of privilege. She was a "Stay at Home" wife and mother who most likely utilized paid housekeepers and nannies. The advantage of having advantages is that she had the time and resources to devote for worthy causes. Melania was the of a car dealer and pattern maker for 's clothing. She actually started modeling at the factory where her mother created patterns. Although not impoverished, she certainly did not have the Privileged life that Barbara Bush led. She modeled, worked her way to the United States, became a citizen and married into privilege. It does not matter if Melania took off her clothes as part of her job and Barbara kept her clothes on for a Charitable cause. It is not important that one woman colors her hair and enhanced her boobs while the other woman did not. It doesn't matter why either woman married their husbands. They both ended up as First Ladies. Different does not mean the one is better than the other. Different is just different. Just my not so humble prospective. |

I think is would have been interesting to see what Bill Clinton's First Lady "Cause" would have been.

Very well stated, Star. I feel the same way. As Dan said, "I wish more civility could return to American politics." Sure the politicians used to sling mud and insults at each other, but I don't ever remember the grown ups around me being so hateful when discussing political figures years ago. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

It is ironic because MrsJoe and I are on opposite sides of the political spectrum but in many ways we are kindred spirits.
