Similarities VERSUS Differences Mrs. Joe

Be assured Mrs. Joe. I am NOT tagging you in any way to present you in a negative light. We have frequently found ourselves at opposite end of the political and perhaps even religious spectrum yet always manage to find common ground.

You have been a spiritual advisor for me on several occasions. When I started in SFF, I was Pagan and now I am on the Quaker path. Ironically, one of our Quaker Dignitaries commented that Full Gospel Folks and Quakers have a lot in common. We both wait on and work with the spirit. We just have different approaches. I remember years ago, when a Pagan High Priestess commented that Pentecostals are like Magickal Christians.

I have a cousin in California whom I dearly love. She has expressed the difficulty of being a conservative in the Left Coast. I often feel like a spot of blue in West Virginia's sea of red. She recently posted about her opposition to illegal immigrates getting a free ride. She was labeled as a racist. I was called an ancestral apologist and was told that Liberals women like me are the worse kind of racists. I assured my Conservative Cousin that neither one of us have to accept someone else's definition of who we are.

There was an earlier post where you were told that you did not deem respect because you did not jump in to defend someone who was unfairly attacked. I remember being a target in a very ugly flame war and I learned from it. I don't get involved with the stick measuring contests. Some people seem to enjoy it but there are ways to deal with if you don't. These kind of exchanges make me physically sick so I stay away from them.

My political views are what they are. I don't have to justify them nor do I have to browbeat someone else into accepting mine. I have seen people scream abuse but do everything to escalate and nothing to stop it.

There are some blogs that I simply don't read and certainly won't respond. Why should I jump into the center of ugliness. If someone wants to inject ugliness and disrespect in my blogs, I have the option to get rid of it with the delete button. I have on occasion used the Iggy/block/report abuse buttons.

You have illustrated quite well how people can build bridges on things they have in common and not allow their differences to divide them. I believe you and I have a bond, built not because of our differences, but in spite of them. It was a rocky start, and there was a huge chasm to cross, but we reached across it to each other and built that bridge.
Do we agree on a lot of things now? Nah, not really. But the things we do agree on are enough to keep that bridge open for communication.
If we could all just look for the similarities and build on them, I believe we could more easily discuss differences in a civil manner.
Of course there are always going to be personality clashes, and some are not able to lay down old hurts.... but for me. I want peace and quiet in my head and heart these days.
Hope you have a good trip to Atlanta.

    Quoting  :

Herbert Hoover was also a Quaker. The Meeting House in Washington DC has tiny rooms where the secret service stayed went Hoover came to worship. Although Nixon was a birthright Quaker, he didn't practice it in his adulthood.
