African Night #6 Saying Good-bye to Zambia: Walking back from 'school' to the place we started our journey, to meet up with the other tribes was needless to say a very quiet experience. Each of us in our own thoughts and our own understandings that we learned, what amazed me was how many of us saw and heard the same thing and still have very different feelings and pin pointed areas that struck us. I would say that one of the common feelings was compassion but how that compassion was brought to life was very different for each of us. Many had compassion as feeling the need to 'do' for the villagers. Perhaps I am stating this wrong.. so as I have written thoughtout my experience here with you ... I will state again.. Although I feel compassion for them - I came to understand as I have in other cultures, that changing them to our way of life are not what they need. To be empowered in their life and ways of living is whai I have learned the best way to help someone or a group of people in their own culture. As a amatter of fact, I have never walked away for a different culture without learning many things from them, where I volunteered to minister and 'help' them out. The fact is their way of life, ministered to me and helped me to see life in a different mindset. I think many people walked away with new understandings whether like my thoughts or not - everyone was affected in some way. What a great job they did on this 'Zambian Village' the only thing missing are the people themselves. As we said Good-bye to the Zambian village - we walked out in silence - through a doorway that before entering we were able to experience the feel of the sand (roads, dirt, floors) of the Zambian village where one of the volunteers smuggled back with her. It was very very find sand... almost like dust.. I remember thinking.. in a wind storm this must get all over the place! Walking through the doorway and inot the next area before the door out - we were able to view the many faces of the that this wonderful group of people have sponsored and given that little light to a people who have much light of their own... I felt as if they were standing on the side of the road waving us good-bye... What an awesome experience... Thank you for coming on this journey with me.. I hope I was able to bring to life at least some of what I felt and seen while I was there... At this time of year - perhaps we can remember the people we think are not as well off as we are and really look at what they have and how they live, not materially but in Spirit and Giving.. we might be surprised on what we see.. May you all have a Very Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year! Merry Christmas Everyone... Gina ![]() ___________ Find the humor each day holds.... Gina |
