Poor, Poor, Management

I have been at my place of work for just over a year. In the time, I have become 5th in line in seniority at one of the largest employers in our area......yea, that sounds bad.
It is not a bad place to work. I really enjoy my job.
In a corporate effort to save money, we work twelve hour shift, which is massively draining. We have had three DON's, the job is stressful, made more stressful by the hierarchy which are all related.
At our facility, being Director of Nursing is a bit like being the guy in the blue shirt on Star Trek, by the end of the weeks episode, you will be gone. I liked the last two DON's very much. The first rolled up her sleeves and did anything needed. The second worked long and diligent hours trying to make real improvements. Now we have a third.
The third spent all morning texting me on my only day off to see if I would come to work, got the Administrator to text me to come to work, and used a cell phone to try and mandate me. They can only mandate by phone, by speaking directly to you. They cannot leave a message, they cannot text.
I am sometimes a reasonable person. I looked at the schedule. I would be following a lovely, gregarious lady, but a shit employee. Cleaning up after her laziness on my one day off, not happening. I already have to work double to clean up after her on my scheduled days. The new DON will have to clean up after her, but she won't. do that. I'll be going back Monday to a heck of a mess.
Al things considered, my phone is going on Airplane mode and I will be planting flowers.
Poor, poor, management.

PRIVATE NURSING HOMES ARE GETTING RATHER BAD PUBLICITY HERE SO YOUR SITUATION IS FAR FROM UNUSUAL I AM SORRY TO SAY. THE ONLY THING ANY OLD PERSON CAN HOPE FOR IS TO STAY AS INDEPENDENT AS POSSIBLE FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.

I have been in good jobs with great staffing, but this place is having it rough.

I worked for decades in long term care in the facilities in our area. I had some great DONs, and some pretty poor ones, which thankfully didn't last very long, and the same with the other nurses. The poor ones didn't seen to last very long. I was blessed with staff that were very caring and good at their jobs and very reliable to be there when scheduled. At one facility, I did my own staff's scheduling, which I allowed them to request days off before I even made the schedule, so everyone was happy. We all seemed to enjoy working together and taking care of our areas elderly and I felt like they got excellent care.
One of my own personal favorite schedules was a double shift twice a week, with a single shift on every other Saturday and Sunday. I still put in the hours, but was only there 3 days a week..... of course, I could always pick up overtime if I wanted.
Fast forward that to about 15 years after I retired when Joe needed long term care for rehab from his broken leg in 2019. The place I wanted for him was totally full with a waiting list, so we had to take what we could get. The first one was horrible, and I had him moved the next morning after he arrived. The place to which he was moved is one that I had worked in for the larger part of my career. I was appalled at the lackadaisical attitude of the CNAs and the just total lack of care. The nurses and the rehab people weren't much better, so I called our doctor and said I wanted him discharged to home because I could take care of him better at home. He wasn't even getting his medicines properly! I would ask where something was, and the nurse would say, "Oh, does he get that now?" I said, "What's your MAR say? It's on the punch card, isn't it?"
We had a home therapy group come in for his physical and occupational therapy, and I did all the rest of his care. We never regretted that decision and the home therapy group was phenomenal.
From the things I saw, and I hear from others I know, I'm sure I couldn't handle the job these days. I would be writing up staff so much they would get fired or I would be because they would have no staff.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Sorry to hear about ur long hours. I found that they just hire bodies at a point. Which makes it hard on the great ones they have in place. The great ones get taken advantage of. I pretty much stopped answering calls and if they don't leave a message, then they have to do the job

Sounds like the majority of my working career. The cost of hiring, training and providing Insurance for new people is huge as compared to what it costs to pay overtime.

The solution for every problem was mandatory overtime.
