Dietary Concerns for Patients of Warfarin and other heart patients

I have been on warfarin for 7 years
Warfarin can be seriously affected by the amount of vitamin K in your diet. And, vitamin K is in many of the foods that we eat in large amounts, including the following:
•liver, •broccoli •brussels sprouts •spinach •Swiss chard •Coriander •Collards •Cabbage •other green leafy vegetables
Even green tea, which has received rave reviews lately for its health benefits, can have a negative interaction with warfarin because of its vitamin K level. This is important for patients to understand, because many people have begun to drink green tea for its health benefits, particularly for those with heart problems.
The reason that green tea has been recommended for heart patients is because it has been shown to be effective in lowering LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol that clogs our arteries). In addition, green tea inhibits the formation of abnormal blood clots, which are the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. So, we have begun to think of green tea as a healthy beverage for people who have heart disease or may be genetically predisposed to heart disease.
However, we now know that those heart patients who are taking warfarin for its anti-coagulation benefits should not drink green tea – or at least should not do so without permission from their doctor.
One compelling piece of information was discovered by the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Florida. One patient receiving warfarin after having a mechanical valve replacement in his aorta, was progressing well with the warfarin treatment. However, his body’s absorption of the drug suddenly changed.
Within one week, the patient’s absorption of the warfarin dropped dramatically. Upon examination of the patient’s diet, it was discovered that he had recently begun to drink about one half to one gallon of green tea per day. Once the patient stopped drinking the green tea, his absorption of the warfarin began to return to normal.
Many people do not recognize that green tea is a significant source of vitamin K, so even if patients have been advised to avoid foods rich in vitamin K, they may not realize that green tea falls into this category.
So, if you’re a heart patient, be sure to talk to your doctor about green tea. Green tea contains many healthful benefits, and can be particularly healthy for heart patients. However, if you’re a heart patient who has been prescribed warfarin, green tea could significantly reduce the absorption of your medication.
If you’d like to drink green tea for its health benefits, your doctor may be able to advise you on a quantity that would be acceptable along with your warfarin.

The lady in the picture is a very close family friend. The antiques are unique. I hope you enjoy viewing many of the exquisite pieces of furniture art. My parents started collecting rare antiques from all over the world in the early 60's right up to the late 80's when my father died. My mother put together all the coordination of colours for which she really has talent and taste. Please enjoy the quality. One day I should put all the furniture and art work on place fook(lol) to show the workmanship and talent that went into their each individual piece...PS...the security systems are unique also....lol

This is one of the most comfortable pieces of furniture I enjoyed. It had all the bells and whistles, including a button I pushed and women would run to be with me. I was hooked up to so many monitors that i could get seven channels on my big toe. I even had a morphine machine with my own remote control !!! Oh yeah, the reason I am smiling is because of the apparatus I had under the sheets that I was using while my brother took the picture

I love the beach and having family down to pamper in any way I can. I love to cook and entertain and provide them with all the creature comforts one would need. In this picture I have myself, my two nieces and their friend at a beautiful beach called "Lovers Key" which is a State park in Florida. The view is amazing and the beach is pristine. Frenchsalsa had a gull steal a piece of cheese right out of her hand as we enjoyed a box lunch fit for my queen

9/11 and trees

Sometimes sleeping over an issue will give one a better insight. I was wrong and blinded by my thoughts of the devastation of 9/11. Trees are a memorial to those who died in modern history. Israel raised millions for its war effort by asking people to donate and in return they planted trees. The USA planted trees to honour their dead or tied yellow ribbons around trees for their missing in action and also for all the reasons 60minman wrote about. I apologize for not seeing the connection. Trees have not always been symbolic in the proper way. Vlad the Impaler used trees for different reasons. Jesus was nailed to a wooden cross. Guillotines were made of wood. But history has changed and the idea of planting trees to commemorate heroes is an excellent idea. But lots of memorials are made of stone such as the wall for those who died in Vietnam. Statutes and other commemorative symbols are made of stone which stand the test of time. I can make name many other situations to defend my thoughts but I sincerely did not see the connection of symbolism when I wrote my blog. The thoughts of the towers falling had captured my mind while I was writing. My sincerest apologies to those I offended and I beg your forgiveness. Not everyone sees issues in the same light and I have been enlightened by all the comments....Larry
to err is human and to forgive devine
