What would you do if neighbors painted their house a gaudy orange? Nov 16, 2007 8:07 am

Yikes! Around the corner from my house, I couldn't believe my eyes. Someone had painted their house a BRIGHT ugly orange! It did not fit with the muted colors that have been in place for decades.

I live in a 'bedroom' community. It was considered a nicer area. Now we seem to be slipping. I guess this is the trend. But I think it will seriously reduce property values.

I wonder if these people want to make a statement that: "We are here, and if you don't like it--tough". I feel like they are making 'fun' of us. Deliberately spoiling the neighborhood. It's cheap looking.

I've daydreamed about throwing a note saying: "Ugly color", or perhaps a splash of pink paint, or an egg. I won't. How would you handle it?

dug a hole and burried it next to the rose bushes. Someone told me the Indians said "A fish for each plant" is good fertilizer.

What do you do with food people give you that is over ripe, or too old to eat?

If you feel like crap, take a nap. Nov 15, 2007 7:42 am

A nap a day is good for your health.
Three craps a day are good for your health.
An apple a day is good for your health.

Yesterday I washed the car, did office work, worked on putting together my drip system in the front yard, cleaned the refrigerator, wipped down some of the floor boards.

Why is it some days I have so much energy and most days I don't? Could it be the nap? The craps? Or the Apple??

One proud American. Nov 3, 2007 10:15 am

I grew up in a family of 6. My Father made minimum wage. He always paid our bills, on time. He was honest and trustworthy. We had the basics. If we could not afford it, we did without or made it ourselves.

My Mother once walked a mile back to a market to return change when she was overpaid. She had a vegetable garden, washed clothes in a ringer washing machine and hung them out to dry. She canned food, made her own soap sometimes, and sewed our clothes. I grew up 50 miles east of Los Angeles.

I know someome from Europe. He has more money that most people. He cheats every chance he gets. As an example, he will try and pass off expired coupons to get discounts. He grew up in a well-to-do family. Maybe he watched this type of behavior growing up. Not all foreigners are dishonest, and unfortunately, not all Americans are honest.

I am so proud of honest Americans. It's what makes our country good.
What do you consider a proud American?

Lavender plants are in the ground! Yipee!!! Oct 29, 2007 7:49 pm

In spite of threatened monster winds (that blew everywhere but here), I was able to get my lavender plants in the ground.

I have a new relationship. It's with my Mantis tiller. I love the little machine that turned my soil and chopped my dead lawn.

I held off planting until the threat of winds passed and the world burned around us (here in So. Calif). I read about 12 articles and books for instructions. I measured, made mounds, dug holes, planted, watered, prayed, and cursed (the curly hose that fought me).

Whats next is the drip system. I bought one about 17 years ago, and its been in my garage. Now I have the time and the reason to use it. Someone said they are nothing but problems, and to use a hose with holes cut where I want water. But I'll give the drip system a chance, since I did spend the money.

I LOVE the smell of lavender. I told my neighbor it would be my dream come true--or it might be my worst nightmare. They laughed nervously.

Ladies: Here's a tip on where to meet senior men. Oct 25, 2007 2:38 am

In our area there are 7 places that serve senior lunch for about $2. There are always lots of men eating lunch by themselves. Some of them are quite flirtacious ladies. Start your engines and go to a senior lunch, you just might meet 'Mr. Wonderful'. (This is a government funded lunch. Often held at senior centers.)

I hope reality measures up to my fantasy (garden) Oct 18, 2007 8:21 am

Finally, FINALLY, I'm taking steps to plant a small lavender field. The plants go on sale Sat.

I have thought about this for YEARS. I've lacked the courage to actually take out my lawn and put in rows of lavender. I'm going ENJOY THE FRAGRANCE, conserve water, and hopefully nurture the bees. (Reports are pumpkin production is down due to drought and the bees dying.)

The small Mantis tiller I ordered is supposed to arrive today. I hope it does the job. I have to put in a drip watering system (any pointers?
I've been reading books on the subject, and checked out 2 videos from the library. IT FEELS SO GOOD to actually WORK on a dream instead of just thinking about it. Hope you can work on YOUR dream today!

It used to be simple to use a phone book--not any more. Oct 1, 2007 5:36 pm

We are about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. Our phone book has gotten larger. They gave us a new area code after splitting up our old one because of population explosion. But trying to look something up in the phone book has become more difficult as they add more sections.

They have a section for seating charts at stadiums and theaters. They have maps and info about zip codes. A street index and international dialing codes. Coupons, and advertisements.

The other day I was trying to find my dentist's number. I never did find it. I resorted to using an old bill of his to get his telephone number. Life WAS simpler in the 'old days'.

Does your dog look you in the eye? Sep 28, 2007 7:52 pm

My friend told me dogs won't hold your gaze if you look them in the eye. Mine does, does yours?

Our dog was found in Los Angeles (about 30 miles away). My daughter brought him here to hold him till he could find a home.

But he turned out to be so gentle, so loving, so good and well behaved that we have kept him. Named him Einstein--he looks like Einstein. He is about 12 pounds and white with a shock of fur standing out on his head. He was ugly. Now that he has put on weight he has a cute face.

He was so well behaved in the beginning, but now he is bossy. I give him diced up turkey with his pet food. He does not like the pet food, he prefers white meat. He barks to be fed and he barks for his walk when evening rolls around. I've spoiled him. I bought him a heating pad that warms in the microwave. When its warm and I put it in his box, he will snap at me if I try to take it away. He won't bite me, but he will move fast as a snake and punch me with his nose.
