while going through, discarding and attempting to eliminate as much material in a material world, I came across my last true loves bed. this, animal, was, and will always remain deep in my heart. never an animal, more human than most I've ever met. do not know if it is sad to say, but it does not feel so, that furry person on four legs meant more to me that most if not any human in my existence. the discovered memory is now gone, with more material going every day. under the current circumstances, this deep heart, reawakening, of sorts, has quickened my step. which is confusing and unknowing why. pretty sure a force is telling me winter is coming to change life as we know it every year, and that everything will change. just do not know how deeply current existence will evolve, change.
the frequency and details of raptor interaction is something to ponder. have always been deeply connected to Mother Earth and do not think that way, usually. frequency could be and is undoubtedly natural, the mind takes it too far, sometimes.

there have always been the occasional sighting of a turkey vulture around the Blue Hills. the last several years they have been seen over an ever increasing range. caught sight of that enormous black wingspan across the street yesterday, lazily floating to Earth, about 100 yards distant. even at a distance, the wingspan is most impressive. have never had a close encounter, or chance meeting with one. I guess it is good to never be in a position where they come to you!

migration and raptors

Peregrines are a migratory raptor. The Peregrine I encountered the other day remains a very, fresh memory. we have hawks that remain year round. yesterday brought an Osprey within sight, that bird rarely roosts for more than a second, but it was enough to see an enormous wingspan and the white and gray flashes. a Blue jay was making a riot of noise at the top of a tree. raptors are relentlessly attacked and harassed in flight, crows and jays, all ganging up to drive them away. in spring, the riot of noise usually means a rodent is attacking a nest with eggs or young birds, or a raptor is overhead or near. that Blue jay above the Osprey in the tree was on a mission, as soon as I was able to focus, poof it was gone in a beautiful flash and the jay was on its tail as soon as it lit.
my hope is this wonder of nature migrates to its winter home soon, it is a separate kind of hurt to see a falcon, master of life, no longer on its migratory path, unceremoniously flattened on a highway rotary. having been able to be up close and in awe of Osprey, Peregrine, Red tail, Red shoulder hawks, in their world, no cages, enclosures, sometimes precipitously close, all from the simple coincidence of being in the woods at the right place and time.
life, in all its forms is precious. with, it seems, so much lack of empathy, respect for life and the empty pursuit of self today. this is a window into tomorrow, a tomorrow that is, seems to be, draining, and the plug has been stolen.

driving to the landfill yesterday, hooked a right off a rotary onto a four lane road. lane three contained the crumpled, but recognizable, by the wing jutting jaggedly up, that I just passed a Peregrine Falcon on the roadway. I was going to pull into a drive to remove it from the indignity of the highway, when realizing, just by touching it I could go to jail. was even inhibited to call any authority figure/s, fearing the pointed finger, I did nothing. feel like I committed an act against nature, will not forget this unexpected sad spectacle in the highway.
oddly, a few days before, during a light rain, there was a flash outside my window, the white caught my eye, the underside of wings, moving rapidly. a red tailed hawk came to roost in the maple tree outside my window. large raptor, all hunched down in the rain, at first it looked like a great horned owl, the outline. the color, and the launch when the raptor took to flight, the huge wingspan, and the rapid disappearance from sight was a sight to behold.
strange circumstances.
