Things are tough all over ......... Dec 16, 2008 6:34 pm

and many people are already in the throes of depression. I don't think there's any denying it.

I see it clearly from the vantage point of working with people needing work, and I know the number of jobs displayed is false. Those jobs remain on the site as "available" when they are not.

Many of those I attempt to accommodate are no longer even the least bit particular about what kind of work they can acquire. Any job, any job at all, would be a Godsend.

There is a commercial cleaning company that posts openings periodically in the area. The last posting I followed through on - just today - had 2,326 hits!!! (The job seeker does not see this.) This is an office cleaning job!! I called the company, told them my connection to the local job center, and inquired as to whether or not this recent job listing was filled. It was. Our net system showed that it was not, that applications were still being accepted for another 14 days!!! By the end of that 14 days, I'm certain another thousand will have applied - in vain.

It's discouraging to me to see the stats skewed like this, not just discouraging, but very scary.

I don't care how much the Fed drops interest rates .... how much help there's been for bailing out banks where those bailouts never "trickle down" .... If a monthly mortgage payment was conceivably reduced by HALF, it STILL cannot be met without a JOB!!

WHERE ARE THE JOBS????

This man is amazing in the talent he has discovered/promoted as a producer/writer, some of whom were American Idol rejects!

Above all, I dearly love Josh Grobin! What a wonderful bundle of talent is that young man?

"A little on the trashy side ......... " Dec 14, 2008 9:48 am

Are you familiar with that country song? The line that went through my head this weekend - which was reminiscent of the occasion - was, "I like women just a little on the trashy side." I don't even know who sings it. It doesn't even matter. But, I was assured this weekend there is most definitely substance to those lyrics .... for some! LOL

Sitting at a corner round table in a favorite haunt with a group of six, I/we was/were able to view a group of young men out a-hootin' & a-hollerin'. It was unusual for this particular establishment, which is normally very subdued and caters to a mature crowd. These young gents quite obviously had a few under their belts. They were an interesting case study. LOL We got some chuckles out of their maneuvers.

In walks an established "regular," a woman in her forties, married with two daughters, but always alone, with a record of 3 DUI's .... so far! She sits at the bar with her double, and exercises a habit of flipping her long, obviously dyed and fried black hair. That hair is so stiff with hairspray, it doesn't have an ounce of bounce. She wears heavy, heavy eye makeup but no lipstick. Though she has thunder thighs, she wears second- skin tight jeans, ALWAYS, and a Harley jacket. I've never seen her dressed in anything but that same attire. I have wondered if she bathes.

It didn't take five minutes before one of those young gents approached her asking, "Hey, Babe .... can I get that one for ya?" She flipped that hair, again, as he laid money on the bar, and with a look of feigned innocence, accepted the offer with a demure thank you. (There must be a clue of something BIG in that hair-flipping thingy! I think I will stand in front of the mirror and practice that .... except my hair is SHORT, and it would never have the same effect, and I'm in my 60's not my 40's which precludes missing the boat!)

Before long, four of these young gents were over blood-hounding the same territory. I wish I could disclose "the rest of the story," which of them emerged the alpha male, but ..... we left, and missed the "climax". LOL

All I can clearly remember were the words to that song running through my head, "I like women just a little on the trashy side." roflmao.

ANOTHER Christmas letter .... a time to be jolly under the holly? Uh huh. Dec 13, 2008 6:57 am

This one came from my sister-in-law in Clearwater, FL ....

Opening sentence: "I hope this year has been as good to you as it has been for Dennis and I. God is good."

The following six paragraphs dwell upon the the surgeries and broken bones the two "enjoyed" in one year's time!!! ... knee replacement and a broken rib occurring in the process of physical therapy, spinal fusion with titanium shock absorbers installed, rotator cuff repair, removal of "suspicious" moles, still another cracked rib in September, and difficulty with recovery, trip back to Wisconsin canceled due to health issues ........

Oh, and the kids won't be home for Christmas this year.

Closing sentence: "May God bless you and your family as much as He has blessed ours."

Sounds more like a curse to me!

I've been working with a guy who is in need of work. It's my job!! I helped him build a resume', a very good one .... not through my efforts but through what he brought to it in the way of experience! (Sometimes, I am called upon to make silk purse of a sow's ear. NOT in this case!)

This is a guy in his early 40's, mind you.

When all was said and done on my part - mainly doing his typing for him because he's a two-fingered picker, and it might have taken him HOURS to accomplish the task - he said to me:

"You know, you are such a wonderful 'help mate' .... when I get a job, I am going to come back and ask you for a date!!"

THAT about blew me out of the water! LOL I didn't know HOW to respond, except to say, "Ya think?" LOL

I wanted to say, "Hey, I have a son that is nearly your age," but I held my tongue and relished in the compliment.

I shared this with nearly everyone in the work place. When I told one of my male colleagues, one very close to me in age, what this guy had said to me, he retorted,, "Hey, you're still pretty damned hot, you know!"

I laughed! I said, "Say that again!! Say that again!!" And he DID! LOL

These were my kudos for today! Ya gotta love it!

........... anyway, that is the way my sister used to sing it until I told her, "It's BOUGHS, not BALLS, ya ninny!!"

This is the same sister that called to thank me for the 'Hospice' plant I gave her. I told her, "It's a hosta, not a hospice, ya ninny!" roflmao

My oldest sis was pregnant at 16 years of age, quit school, married and continued to produce .... ten kids later, YES!!!, she STILL cannot speak English. (HEY! Doesn't every family have one of these?)

She amuses me with the words she comes up with!!!! roflmao!!!!

Dealing with angst in the work place ...... Dec 10, 2008 4:30 pm

and letting the rest of the world go by .... to my chagrin!!

No matter how much one expresses themselves here in cyber .... all the romanticism .... all that is right or wrong with the world .... all that would be, could be ..... there is reality, and that is what ultimately smacks us in the face.

My focus, lately, is day to day .... in the work place .... and dealing with a very difficult person.

I've been busy sorting and coordinating a lot of resource materials brought over from a site that has recently closed its doors. The State of Wisconsin at one time had 72 Job Centers, one for every county in the state; we are now down to 22 and they are shooting for 11 by going 'virtual'. I've had to absorb/accommodate all the excess in resource materials that have been transported to those sites that are expected to survive. We have double this, triple that, and quaddruple these and those ... a ton of State waste in the final analysis.

In the process of sifting and sorting today, I laid my hands on a little paperback book titled Start Right ... Stay Right, Every Employee's Straight-Talk Guide to JOB SUCCESS and began reading. WOW!! What a little gold mine of information/advice!

Though I have been provoked to no end with someone who is exceedingly difficult to deal with, this little book places it all back on my own shoulders!! It gives me the power to take it all back, make it MINE, and look at it in a totally new light. It demands, almost, that I take charge of my own attitude and rise above the small stuff and allow NO ONE to get me in a wad! Rather I am advised to smile, be pleasant, be accommodating ... not be the same as the person who causes me strife. This little book insists, it's the ONLY way to win!!

This little book, a small treasure chest, has caused me to rethink the whole scenario. My challenge is apply it. I may be old, but, hopefully, I am never too old to learn!! I'm going to give it my best shot!! I'll give it some time and application and report back.

Potpourri's posting of HUSBANDS for SALE prompted a ressurection of this joke! Dec 9, 2008 8:19 pm

A man wanted to get married. He was having trouble choosing among three likely candidates. He gives each woman a present of $5,000 and watches to see what they do with the money.

The first does a total make over. She goes to a fancy beauty salon gets her hair done, new make up and buys several new outfits and dresses up very nicely for the man. She tells him that she has done this to be more attractive for him because she loves him so much.

The man was impressed.

The second goes shopping to buy the man gifts. She gets him a new set of golf clubs, some new gizmos for his computer, and some expensive clothes. As she presents these gifts, she tells him that she has spent all the money on him because she loves him so much.

Again, the man is impressed.

The third invests the money in the stock market. She earns several times the $5,000. She gives him back his $5,000 and reinvests the remainder in a joint account. She tells him that she wants to save for their future because she loves him so much.

Obviously, the man was impressed.

The man thought for a long time about what each woman had done with the money he'd given her.

Then, he married the one with the biggest boobs.
Men are like that, you know.

real life sometimes takes precedent! I had to do my grocery shopping, clean my fridge, scrub my toilets, and fold that laundry, put up a X'mas tree, and wash that kitchen floor on my hands and knees, and finish knitting that scarf for my young friend who now looks like a girly man and LOVES it *smirk* ... all between having to work for a living! Gimme a break! (Besides, I just cannot have Mac telling me that his toilet bowls are cleaner than mine!! THAT would be unforgivable!)

I see, now, that my mug has fallen off the blogger's list. Guess I'm just not popular anymore .... just because I tend to things that need doing!! *SIGH* .... how soon forgotten!

X'mas letters that make you barf!! Dec 4, 2008 6:34 am

Yeah .... I already got my first one from a niece. One of those people who write bragging about all the wonders that have occurred in the past seasons. They are always the first to send them out. They seem to want to make sure that people will return with drooling chins utterly jealous of all the marvelous fortune they've enjoyed - their perfect kids and their wonderful achievements, their brilliant grand-children, their lavish homes, those awesome globe-trotting trips, and yes, those two new Corvettes parked side by side in the driveway of that mansion, one red, one white, and each leaning against their own. (YES!!! I actually got that picture!!! I put it on my fridge next to a picture of me standing next to my 1999 Toyota Corrolla. roflmao!!) These letters are not one page, but two type-written pages long expounding upon how absolutely glorious life is!!! Good LORD!!!

Problem is .... she failed to mention that her one and only son, a senior in high school earlier this year, can't stand her new husband, that they had a big old blow-out, and her son was literally kicked out of the new husband's house late at night without as much as being permitted to take a change of underwear with him.

He drove to grandma and grandpa's place, 40 some odd miles away, after midnight, in need of a place to stay. He drove the car the new daddy dearest had provided for him BEFORE the marriage. By the time the kid landed on his grandparent's doorstep, he was greeted with the message that daddy dearest had reported that car stolen. His mom, who is obviously more smitten by gold and silver than concern for her own son, assured her parents she was "with" her hubby all the way on this one.

And, it only got worse. My niece refused to discuss what happened, but she assured my sis, her mom, that Kenny would never be welcomed back in her hubby's house again, that she did not care if he lived in the street.

Well, Kenny remained with his grandparents who got him through he senior year of high school all at their own expense, more or less telling the new son-in-law to stuff it. Upon graduation, Kenny joined the Marines.

And .... MIND YOU .... in the X'mas letter, Mom is bragging about Kenny turning out so well. Oh, my good GOD!!! Like SHE is taking credit for it!! She deserted her own blood in exchange for wealth .... and according to my sis, things are not so great in Paradise. YOU'D never know it by reading this letter!

Enuf, already. You get the picture of those phony letters where everything is right and wonderful in one's little mind and space.

Excuse me while I barf.
