Yesterday I asked what y'all would answer for this question:
What do you love, and how do (or will) your actions represent this?
I haven't come up with my scholarship answer, but yesterday evening helped a little bit. Apparently, my daughter was once again told (by her stepmother) to leave her father's home. This telling involved screaming, swearing, and so on, except on the part of my daughter and her father who both just went along with whatever. So here is my knee jerk reaction to the question given the events of last night.
I love being a parent. From the moment my first child was born and I decided that the notion of going back to work at six weeks was impossible, my heart and soul were wound up in learning more about my children (who are pictured here), sharing their days, and delighting in who they are.
For some, children are a proof that their essence will go on into eternity. That is not the rush for me. The excitement lies in seeing my children develop into adults who can handle good news and bad, who can chase after their dreams, who can love others in a healthy fashion, who understand the importance of relationship with others on all levels.
When I listen to my son's concerts and watch his joy performing or watch his skill/happiness in parenting, all is right with the world. When my daughter sorts through options with a situation or her goals and reaches for the stars, all is right with the world.
It is interesting to me that people say they give up so much to have children. I understand that more as I witness my son getting ready to become a parent before he has finished college and I experience fear for him and his goal of finishing college. As a parent though, the Tuna Helper, lack of fancy clothes, vacations not taken, and all that is perfectly great. I have had the privilege of knowing two very wonderful people and of sharing love with those people. Who could ask for more?

I am in the process of applying for scholarships (having decided to go back to school and get my doctorate). One of the scholarship applications asks this question:
What do you love, and how do (or will) your actions represent this?
Interesting question. I'm thinking about going at it from a music angle. But you know, it's not just a good question for a scholarship, but for life. Do our actions reflect what we love and value?
Do you have an answer for this question?

My 19 yr old daughter, Katie, continues to have problems with her father. Yesterday she called me and asked if I would be free to talk in the evening as her dad wanted to have a 'summit' meeting immediately when she was done with work. This is the outcome.
Katie has a place to live, for a month. Then she has to find someplace else (which is fine because that is what Katie wanted).
He told her a couple of things: 1) She has to choose between getting a new to her car (her car will likely be totalled out and the insurance isn't going to cover it because he and his wife only got her liability) OR finishing up her dental implants (she is in the middle of the process with screws hanging out of her gums right now). 2) He and his wife refuse to do the Free Application For Student Aid (FAFSA) application because they believe that their taxes are none of Katie's business and that she will not get financial aid based on their income. 3) If she has any problems with that, she should talk with her mom.
AUGH! I still am not sure what to do because I am so mad and have so many rhetorical questions! When I pray about it the answer is "wait" which is probably good since I am so steamed.
Any pearls of wisdom for me?

... with a little furball runt kitten. He is grey, stripe and spotted as Cheetohs are. And when I went to the cat breeders on Sunday to meet the kittens, he just kept finding me and snuggling in my hands (and I have small hands!).
I think I'll name him Earl(Grey T.).
The breeder says that I have to take a littermate so that Earl will have someone to play with while I am out and about doing all my things. (do you suppose they'll behave as the cats in the picture?? haha)
So one of his brothers is a nice dark color with copper spots and stripes.
But the name presents a problem for this one. Do I go with the "title" theme and name him Duke or Prince? Or do I stay with the tea theme? If so, what's a nice rich dark tea?
Right now the kitties are 9 weeks old, so four more weeks before I can take them home. In the meantime, I am purring in anticipation!

Stress Week

The time away was stressful and returning here has been stressful too. Goodness.
Here's a brief rundown: while in the south, - my sister was told that having a gunman in her workplace was not a legitimate cause for anxiety (and she wanted to talk about it) - my daughter experienced some horrible problems with her stepmother (and wanted to talk about it) - my 28 yr old niece was diagnosed with lung cancer - my son found out that his pregnant girlfriend of two years has never actually filed for divorce from her husband - it was spilled that the baby is a girl - my body had one of those lovely stress outbreaks for several days which feels like the flu - I went and saw a fabulous play - I got to sing some with old friends
when I got back, - my mailbox was overflowing - a friend had a crisis that she felt could not wait until I was settled and rested - I had to go to a home where a young lady had been found dead - a person at my installation needed an advocate in the emergency room (that was me) - my daughter's problems with stepmother got worse and I uttered something I promised myself I wouldn't ("if you lived in Ohio, this wouldn't be an issue." Ugh) - my daughter had a car wreck (not surprisingly, given how stressed she is) yesterday and her father and stepmother told her there is no reason to get checked out by a doc
So, last night I went to the movies (Prince Caspian, which was really good especially since the Prince is CUTE!) and dinner with a friend. Today, I am easing into the day and then will go cantor and go on a date this evening. Tomorrow I am going to get some cat therapy with my future kitten, a Cheetoh breed that I will name SPOT! I made an appt for a massage on Monday, but may have to cancel since I will be paying the copay for my daughter to go to the doc. I hope I don't have to. The massage sounds SO GOOD!
Surprisingly, keeping track of my health has worked fine in the middle of all of this. I love fitday, a fabulous website where one can track what you eat and how you exercise. I did manage to get good sleep most nights (I'm finding that really important right now). And I have been able to walk or do circuit training every day.
In the balance, I would change the scenarios for people, but it has been okay.
I did tivo a soap opera while I was gone, but decided to erase them all since I have had QUITE enough drama!
What's new in your world?

I've just spent the past 10 days in the South, can you tell?
And it sounds like I've missed some interesting times in the blogs. Sigh. Slowly but surely I will catch up.
Here's the news from my trip: My son's girlfriend looks delightfully pregnant, but I keep thinking of her being in her last trimester in the summer in Georgia. Blech.
My daughter is doing well and is happy.
We had a great Mother's Day celebration. My son wrote me the nicest note! Made me tear up.
The sexual assault prevention and intervention training I went to was excellent. There were several people there who I had known from jobs in other fields and places.
There were tornadoes all around me most of the time. I feel so blessed that I didn't get hit with any of them! The damage was awesome in the traditional sense of the word.
Then I came to work and was going to go home at half day because of not feeling too swell, but a lady of 42 was found dead in her home (they say natural causes) and I had to work with the personnel who were upset and the family (sigh, including the twin sister of this lady). It was a long day.
So, y'all be good now, hear? I'll be catching up with you!

Gender Surprise

My son and his girlfriend are expecting a baby in September. Yesterday she found out the gender of the baby. My son and I have chosen to not know. My daughter, my ex, the girlfriend's entire family .. they all know the gender of the baby now too.
I am torn.
Knowing the gender would certainly make shopping easier. Knowing the gender would help with getting all geared up and I could even put the name on the birth sampler I will be making. But knowing the gender seems like cheating to me too.
Most of us are from an era where knowing the gender ahead of time wasn't done or was unthinkable. I remember just knowing my son was a boy and with my daughter being totally set that it HAD to be a girl! (I don't know what I would've done if she was a boy, haha)
So tell me: would you find out the gender of the baby or not? why?
