Scotch and Cigars on the Deck The weather this weekend was awesome! Spring has arrived. Warmer weather means time to enjoy evenings on the deck. As far as I am concerned, there are few better ways to end the day than sharing time with a close friend. Well, adding a fine cigar and a good single-malt is the better way. That is why the deck is so important. I have been looking forward to this day and was highly motivated to enjoy the first weekend of Spring. Saturday, I made time to power wash the deck, finishing the detail work on Sunday afternoon. It looks great! My new box of Alec Bradly Cigars arrived last week, and the beverage center was full of beer. My alumni buddy Dennis was available, so I invited him over to join me. Dennis brought the spirits, I provided the cigars. It’s a routine we enjoy during warmer weather and it’s a great way to start the new week. Just after 8:00 p.m., cigars were lighted, scotch was poured, and we toasted our good fortune. Dennis and I share the same birthday, Baby-Boomers, separated by a few years. We grew up squarely in the Middle Class; his father a successful entrepreneur, mine a 30-year career Air Force Officer. We share the same values, including a certain reverence for the institutions of our youth. The conversation is wide-ranging, usually beginning with a recap of the past week’s political activities. We share the same political persuasion, so this line of discussion is usually short with disagreement confined to the interpretation of details. Mercifully, we quickly moved to more important topics, like beer. As I have written before, Dennis is my Beer Guru. He is my “go to” guy on the subject. Everyone knows about the explosion of the craft beer industry which began in the 70′s. What may not be so widely known is the re-introduction of iconic brands from our youth. Hamms, Schlitz, and Stroh’s to name a few. As Dennis grew up in Minnesota, Hamms was a local favorite. In fact, the artist who drew the Hamms Bear cartoon character was a family friend. Dennis was excited to have bought a case of Hamms but did not get to enjoy much of it as he gave away most as samples. He was hoping to bring me a few cans, but he was out by Sunday. When I lived in the Toledo Ohio area in the early 80′s I came to enjoy many regional favorites, including Stroh’s. Reminiscing about these brands from another time led to further discussion about other childhood pursuits we shared; like watching professional Baseball on the television. It was a time when announcers smoked cigarettes on live broadcasts, and beer commercials were classic. Yes, we have fond memories of those times that younger generations cannot appreciate. It goes without saying that our perspective was limited by our youth and innocence. I'll pass on the cigar, but the scotch sounds yummy! ... on the rocks please.

I have smoked cigars many many years ago. Not a whole cigar but most of it. Stroh's, heavens haven't heard of that in along time. I lived in Barberton, Ohio. My daughter and her family lived in Paulding and Toledo, Ohio so I would go up to visit. Now we drink Guinness. Tried a black and tan the other day, it was ok but I told the bar tender I still prefer Guinness on tap, ever since my first drink of it in Ireland.
