Ketamine is being used more and more these days. My sister has had a couple of patients on it but their problem was management of severe pain. Of course they were depressed as well. I can not imagine being in constant, sever pain without getting depressed about it. Mixed results. Good luck. Hope you are one of those it can help.

Just about everyone who tried it got some pain relief but as you said there is the risk of abuse because it is easy to establish a dependency on something that relieves pain. I think they all got some degree of pain relief but one had serious side effects like increased depression and while not hallucinations some paranoid delusions. One found that it made her very weak so she constantly had to rest. It's like most meds, including the ones I will take for the rest of my life or at least until better ones come out. They are all bad for us in some way so the choice to take them or not is a trade off. Kind of naming your poison or in a more positive light deciding which is the most important issue and addressing it in the best way possible even if it is less than ideal.

One of my sisters was an addict but has been clean for 20 years. The problem is that the addictive personality remains. She has serious non correctable back problems and needs pain medication in order to keep working and doing other life tasks. Her solution is to switch frequently to lessen the possibility of addiction.

I have no idea what your source of pain is but it sounds chronic. If you are not already involved I would suggest trying a pain management clinic.
