It appears they are silent about this atrocity...... they seem to only rally around perceived injustices, not the real ones.
The sad part is that these girls can never get back what was taken from them..... even if the doctor is sued, money cannot fix this.
Part of me says to deport her, the other part says to take away her medical license, prosecute her and put her in prison..... of course, she will just continue the practice without a license when she gets out. Perhaps deportation is best, at least she won't be torturing girls in our country any more.

Many organization in Canada and in other parts of the world have been actively working to get this practice banned and those participating in mutilating these girls prosecuted for years.

Just because it has not made news headlines in the USA until now, doesn't mean that this issue hasn't been on the radar of humanitarians... and yes... feminists around the world.

What Rocket says is true...and they have been actively working to ban it since the 1970s. Until now, when it has become something else to hold against "Muslims"

Like the wearing of the hijab and burka, FGM is a cultural practice, not a religious mandate.

I do agree that although it's banned in pretty well every country on Earth, there are woman & men who still cling to the barbaric cultural practices of their ancestors.

We can't drag folks into the 21st century kicking and screaming, but through education, integration, and the law, I think things will change more rapidly.

I encourage any readers interested, to check out the site I referenced above.

Did you really mean to say that 'it appears that some in here are trying to justify this practice'!!!!! How could you read that into anything I've written!!

You are SOOOOO very wrong!!

This is NOT a political ...liberal/conservative ....issue.

It's a HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE!!

Another posted that statement, Ranger.

As you know, I do not comment on the political situations in other countries.

Some issues affect our whole planet, and many work in difficult situations to improve the lives of others no matter who or where they are.

Hi Boogie, My major in university was anthropology, and I spent a good deal of time researching the history and practice of FGM.

In the past, when women in our society were considered chattel, it's unfathomable to we modern women, the horrors of the time. Similarly, when I mention to my g'daughters how women were controlled during my growing up years, they give me 'the look'.... like .... really??

Yes, we ALL, both women & men, need to be vigilant when it comes to protecting the rights of children and ALL of us!!

Thank you! The history of child abuse through the ages and across cultures is interesting and so depressing..... sighhhhh.

I don't think that this topic is 'avoided by many women'. They just have or had no idea this practice existed. Had I not taken that particular anthropology course on an historical prospective of child abuse, I may never had known about it either.

Some 'poo-poo' higher education, but knowledge is power since the more we know the less likely it is that folks can pull the wool over our eyes.
