While we don't live in Iowa, raising hogs was a part of our lives when younger. Years ago, most farmers in our area raised a few hogs, a few head of cattle, a milk cow or two and some chickens. Depending on the market and a farmer's land, the amount of hogs and cattle would change from year to year. Then, as the small farmers dwindled, farms began to specialize.
Hence, we have the big hog farms in Iowa, while here in Illinois you find far less livestock. I am smiling as I write this, because my brother-in-law used to laugh when we passed a hog farm.... "yummmm" he would say, "the smell of MONEY."
