Progress to the only solution I see for our messed up political legal system. It's not fixable so toss it out and start over. Will be watching this with interest for a change.

I take pride in the fact that the majority of sane people and former voters are beginning to realize that that all politicians are crooks. The words politician and honesty do not belong in the same sentence.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

In the recent past, Canada has gone to a 4 year election cycle.

Unlike the American senate, ours is like the British one, filled by the government in power at any one time, with patronage appointments [cronies & political pals].

Because of this, and the seemingly poorly regulated spending, most Canadians want the senate eliminated..... Me too!!

Our official campaign period is usually about 35 days or so, but this one will be 77 days. There are strict spending limits.

I, like Alfie, have a cynical opinion of politicians.

Puzzles, thanks for this blog, excellent! Yes, I would also be in favour of abolishing the Senate (a useless body of people whom we not only pay big bucks to but who also received unbelievable pensions above and beyond those who have served in the military or civil service for many years)!!

Maisie, we normally have a campaigning period in Canada of 30 days. This is a once in a lifetime 77-day happening due to circumstances! We are so very thankful our Canadian government does not have a 4-year campaigning period!!! A definite monetary waste!

When it is a majority party the PM gets to do what he wants providing the Governor General sanctions the dissolution of parliament.

Harper keeps giving me more reasons not to vote Conservative.
Dropping the writ so early is yet another one.

This is going to cost the Canadian taxpayer about 125 million more just for Elections Canada.

This money could have been far better spent fighting our non-existent terrorist threat.

I sincerely hope Harper and his gang of thugs get turfed in October.

Strict spending limits? That would be most welcome here, at least to me.

Hi Sandy: Fareed Zakaria of CNN had a show awhile ago about abolishing the US Senate and how much money it would save the taxpayers, so I'd definitely vote to abolish our Senate here. What job duties do Canadian Senators have anyway? If you watch the Parliamentary channel, all any of our politicians seem to do is make speeches, the all the other politicians yell and scream at whoever is speaking.

I'm sure that someone else will explain it better than I, but it just means that he can call an election. The chamber... in this case.. the House of Commons doesn't disappear, we just elect a new one, and yes, the same members can run for seats again. (We need term limits here in Canada too.)

Thank goodness for a well oiled and run civil service which keeps everything going in the meantime!

Like Americans, we often feel that it's just the big guys & gals playing a game in which we, the people, have little or no control, and they're playing with our tax dollars.

As Rentier said, by doubling the campaign period, it will cost taxpayer an extra $125 million...... Grrrrrr.............

Hey Rentier, looking at the opposition parties, there's not much choice, is there?? A few provinces have tried the NDP provincially and that has worked terribly & not in the people's favour (& hence much regret). As for Trudeau's party, I shudder to think with him at the helm!! OMG

The NDP in the western provinces has run better finances than the other parties.

Saskatchewan under Roy Romanow had a great fiscal track record.

Prairie Dippers are different from the ON and BC loonies.

Puzzles, inasmuch as many Canadians feel that the senate should be abolished, from what I understand it will never happen. The Senate will never be abolished because Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, PEI and NS refuse to go along with this since (as they claim & it’s true), it is in our constitution (1867), which states there will always be senators who will be appointed to the senate till age 75. In addition, each province has a quota for appointing senators, Ontario being the largest province has the highest quota (i.e. 9 I believe). For Mulcair to tell you that he will abolish the senate is a huge lie.. he can’t… another one of his socialistic false election promises!! The same goes for Trudeau's many promises!!

Hey Rentier, the western provinces?? Ask the people of Manitoba right now how they're enjoying a provincial NDP government!! I agree that Romanov was a great Premier and that was probably because his policies were very much unlike those of the NDP party in general (elsewhere). Although he was voted out, he didn't tax the middle class etc & give to those not as willing to work for a living!! However, I highly doubt you can compare Romanov to Mulcair's policies of today.

I haven't been following the Manitoba situation.

But you could also ask the people of Alberta (the most conservative populace in the country) how much they enjoyed that past couple of PC govts.
