I just learned that high school classmate, a lawyer in Toronto, has it.

He still has periods of clarity, but I don't imagine things will get better.

Your floral tribute is wonderful. I'm wondering if she can still paint and if she does what her work is like. If she can maintain her artistic expression it would be a fascinating insight into what she thinks and feels.

I went through vascular dementia with my mother. Her intelligence was her most outstanding quality. She had been an army officer then director of nurses at a large hospital. It was heartbreaking to see her deteriorate to the point of carrying my sister's purse around thinking it was a loaf of bread. With vascular dementia there are "clear" times when the individual is very aware of what is happening to them. I can only imagine how horrible this was for her.

Fortunately almost all of my east coast family are medical professionals so we had an abundance of professional level help but it was the basic caregivers who did the most for her and bore the brunt of her illness. A friend who is a geriatric nurse but not working at the time spent hours with her every week and took her to appointments etc. Fortunately, other than family she didn't have a social life. All of her close friends had already passed as she was in her 90's.

One of the last times I visited she did not recognize me and kept asking who that "young woman" was. She had 2 young boys as constant companions. No one else ever saw or heard them. A memory I will savor for the rest of my life is the fact that on the day I left from my last visit she was amazingly clear and did know who I was. At least I got to say good bye to the person I knew
