Not sure about the dog, like lightning he usually doesn't strike the same place twice. Keeps me guessing where to scoop. He probably don't think about which way to face. Myself, north for #1, south #2. And generally west for my backyard urinal. And I have a weak sense of direction, which is why they didn't let me drive the airplane. Hope that helps...

Always have to watch the dogs do their thing or anything else because of coyotes. Other than chuppie doing the chihuahua dance (turning left and right two or three times) they have no preference where they face.

I can answer this now. Our little dog usually faces into the wind to do her job, and since our prevailing winds are south, south west, that is the direction she usually faces...... but if it is a north wind, she faces north.

That is so interesting. I don't have a dog anymore but will watch the replies. Speaking of coyotes, I live in a big city with lots of lights and traffic, but recently I was out walking and saw a coyote running right down the middle of the street. I ran home and did an internet search and sure enough it was a coyote I saw and it said there are many of them in the cities here. I wonder where they hide during the day?

In the city? WOW. I have seen deer at the edge of town, but to think a coyote would venture into a city is wild. I wonder if it is search of food? We watch our little dog carefully in the evening, night, and very early in the morning when she goes out, because we do have coyotes in our area and some nights I won't let her out at all because I can hear them nearby.
Usually they run when they see people, unless they are sick or hurt, so that is why I am surprised at them being in the city.

Hi Pat: I was surprised to see that coyote running right down the white line in the street. I was terrified but it ran right past me and didn't pay any attention to me at all. I used to walk very early in the morning when it's still dark, and I have also seen three mountain lions. It said on the internet that there are thousands of mountain lions, coyotes and other wild animals living in every city. It warned that you should never tie up a dog outside as they would be helpless against a coyote. It said that they're not really interested in people, but if you run into a coyote you should make noise and raise your arms up over your head to make yourself look as big as possible and they won't hurt you. All the wild animals I have encountered on my walks were just a few yards away from me and not one of them paid me any attention and just passed right by.
