NECTAR CANNOT POSSIBLY BE PROPER NOURISHMENT. BIRDS NEED SOLID FOOD AND EAT INSECTS, THAT IS WHY THEY ARE SO USEFUL.

Nileyears replies on 9/7/2022 6:29 pm:
In all my years of being around them and watching videos of the little birds, not once have they ever shown them eating insects. Always saying how much nectar they must have everyday to live, but never mention that they eat bugs as well. So with that, I thought that was their diet.

What you said reminded me of something one of my bosses told a new hire.

I was training some new hires and one kid kept interrupting. My boss stood up and told him he'd better pay attention, she's probably forgotten more than you will ever be capable of learning.

I think he meant it as a compliment, but at the time, I wasn't quite sure, LOL.

Thank you, Nile, sharing here what you observed...... I did not know either that hummingbirds did not live on nectar alone. There is a reason for everything in nature.

You're welcome Myseek.

Thanks for letting me know I wasn't the only person in the world that didn't know that.

I didn't know that either, Nile, so that makes three of us. 😀 Nice post, thanks for sharing.

Nileyears replies on 9/7/2022 6:32 pm:
Make that four of us, Twilight said she didn't know that either.

Happy to share this with you Maudie and thanks!

I'll keep my eyes open for new discoveries.

I did not know that about hummingbirds! My gardens are full of hummingbirds this may be yet another secret to me not having garden pests. I gave the credit to the wrens and the bats, but now I must include the hummers in that list. What a great thing to find out, we just never stop learning!

Nileyears replies on 9/7/2022 6:44 pm:
Good to know that now there are four of us that didn't know this, and yes, we do keep learning. Isn't it great?

So your little hummers get the best of both worlds from your gardens, that's wonderful.

I'm going to have to make a flowerbed for next year, right now the hummers only get nectar from blossoms from fruit trees, wild flowers and vegetables... oh and also the over ripe peaches at the top of the peach tree that I can't reach.

I did not know this about hummingbirds so that makes five of us. My next door neighbor has a humming bird feeder. I will mention that to her and see is she knows that hummingbirds eat more than sugar water.

Nileyears replies on 9/8/2022 7:25 am:
5 out of 6 so far.

My Mom used to put out a feeder for hummers, I wonder if she knew they also ate bugs? It would be interesting to find out if your neighbor knows this?
