I think you did right, Nile. If you had said yes, sooner or later your neighbor would ask for you to borrow something else.

Yep, kids!! He could go to town and rent one of those hand augers for about $70.00 an hour.

I'll suggest that to him, lol.

That must have been a nightmare! I can see it now, him putting gas in my diesel tractor!!

I don't mind sharing, my old neighbors and I would help each other out as best as we could, but we had known each other for awhile.

They moved to Joshua, not me. Thanks for the warning, I'll make sure I drive under the speed limit when I go and visit them.

Hiram, lol, I didn't want to start a war, just letting him know I'm not a pushover!

Thanks Glumo, I think you're correct. Saying no gets easier with experience.

Maybe that's why they've moved, wore out the old neighbors tools and equipment!

Once you let a neighbor begin borrowing it becomes a ritual and every time they need a piece of equipment they come a-knocking on your door. I've had personal experience of that in the past. You did the right thing!

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Thanks Lulu, I hope he's clued in now!

I always thought that when I finally retired that me and my old neighbors would get to hang out with each other more, but no, it didn't work out that way. I miss them already.

I forgot to add, I like West, but never thought of moving down that way, besides, my kids might get a little upset if I move too far from them.

I have to say Rae, as you know, there are similarities between what you said and what happened to me. Some people think that it's fine to abuse someone's kindness. I'm glad you were wiser than I was. Good for you!

Why thank you Elaine. When your brain starts calculating what might happen to a piece of equipment that costs $25,000.00 dollars, run by a kid who might be 25 years old, the red warning light starts flashing in my head.

I have learned the hard way that other people do not take care of your property, and they don't feel obligated to repair it either. The same thing goes with giving people inside information when trying to help them out. We do learn though and that's a good thing!

I can't imagine loaning an expensive piece of equipment to someone you just met. Either he knows nothing about personal boundaries or nothing about tractors. Either way you don't someone with so little common sense using your equipment.

I also think many young folks don't get it that many seniors can not afford to replace things or "do over" if something goes wrong.

Thank you Spirit. I honestly believe some of the younger generation don't have boundaries, everything has been handed to most of them. From what I understand, his father in law paid closing cost and the down payment for the property, so that tells me that both he and his wife won't have a problem asking when they want to borrow things.

I decided I will be polite, but distant with these kids, besides, I do like my privacy.

Well thank you Looklook, but I only look tough, deep down I'm a teddy bear, a teddy bear that learned to say "NO".

Hi Mary Ann, it seems like most of us would have done the same thing, told him no. He did seem kind of miffed about it, but that's his problem and he needs to get over it.

It's going to be hot here as well, but there is a breeze blowing today which almost makes it bearable.

What happened to all that rain water? Dry as a bone here also.

ET I don't understand it either, I wasn't raised to be like that, asking for stuff, or borrowing things from other people.

I never liked being put in this type of a situation, but saying no gets easier everyday.
