MINOR CME IMPACT SPARKS AURORAS

According to NOAA analysts, a CME sideswiped Earth's magnetic field on Feb. 9th. The glancing blow sparked auroras over both poles. Taichi Nakamura sends this picture from Dunedin, New Zealand.

"We saw some beautiful aurora beams last night while enjoying the night with the wild scenery at the cliff of The Chasm near Dunedin," says Nakamura.

At the other end of the Earth, an even more dramatic display appeared. "We had one of the most amazing nights in a long time," reports aurora tour guide Marketa Murray of Fairbanks, Alaska. "The northern lights were so close it felt like we could reach out and touch them."
