DANGERS OF WASHING RAW CHICKEN I was going to post about Roseanne Barr but it seems everyone beat me to the punch. I instead made a comment on someone else's great post (Star's). It definitely did intrigue me regarding the aftermath. It seems that when an actor takes a job, he/she better make sure the other actors in the production are all non controversial or they could end up kissing their residuals goodbye. I read something today that I wanted to discuss because it's important. To wash raw chicken or not wash it, that is the question. Seems Julia said to wash them but her co-star disagreed. It seems to be a hot topic and one with potentially dangerous consequences if the wrong choice is made. There is a risk of cross contamination. Raw chicken has some deadly forms of bacteria. Salmonella is the one that most heard about but isn't the only one. When you wash raw chicken, it could get on other things and that can be deadly. I read something about soaking it in water instead and then putting it in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours. That may be the best bet but I am not sure. Do you wash your raw chicken before cooking it? Elaine Shuel |

I just looked at this pic I saw on the internet and put above. Interesting, she seems to have a cloth that she is using to clean the chicken. Perhaps that is a good choice too. DON'T take my advice regarding this topic as I am not a cook. Sometimes I cook something but I am not an expert on this subject, far from it. Elaine Shuel

I read that the other day and it has turned me off chicken completely......It's always been borderline for me anyways.......I was looking at skinned chicken breasts today.......I like poaching them with a bouquet garni and shredding them into a Ceasar salad......but I couldn't do it........they looked so disgusting......thinking of how they were raised and all the possible, invisible, insidious bacteria.....no thanks.

You mean..... like with dish soap and water? Or just put them in the dishwasher? Honestly, I don't buy whole chickens anymore. If I buy chicken, it is either already prepared, or I buy the frozen skinless breasts and no I don't wash them. But if I do cook chicken, I cook it thoroughly. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I have been drinking a lot of chicken broth lately. I just throw it in the instant pot for two hours. I hope it doesn't have any creepy crawlies in it. The alternative is rattlesnake oil.

By the way, somethings never change. My post didn't show up for half a day and I had to write customer service. Elaine Shuel

Ah cleaning in the washing machine and dryer. Another great idea. Yes, I have always been careful not mixing utensils and cleaning up the area well afterwards but I guess they are saying during washing, things spurt and you could miss an area. You don't wash it so you are safe but for some reason the idea of not washing it first really bothers me. I think the soaking it in water may be the best solution. Thanks for your input and wish tips, Maisie. Elaine Shuel

I learned that rinsing raw chicken in the sink could be deadly several years ago so I stopped doing it. I still clean the counters after with Lysol after cooking chicken. The suffering of all farm animals is heartbreaking. Between the suffering and eating whatever illness the animals had, and the germs, I wish I had the determination to be a vegetarian.

I've never had a problem with it, washed, unwashed I've eaten chicken reheated etc, broke 'the rules' and no problems. It doesnt mean I'm going to eat it smelling or pushing boundaries to the limit but I think the paranoia can be overdone about it all. If your prep area is clean all the time no worries. Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

I rejected eating chicken meat since I saw a video how those chicken being raise. In one small place they raise thousands and the consequences they were not enough on the space and they killed and eat one another. So disgusting to see. We bought a packed of chicken soup in Costco the other day, now that I read this, I am sure I will not use them anymore. I am glad I eat much vegetables. "The only way to have a friend is to be one."

Sometimes I'll run the chicken pieces under cold water and pat them dry with paper towelling, and sometime not... no particular reason either way. Just make sure the chicken is cooked thoroughly. **Nice to see you back Shuel~~

That is the first rule, MySeek, correct. That would be very dangerous. Thanks for your comment. Elaine Shuel

Wow, I am impressed. Yes what you wrote is exactly what they are saying and for many people including myself, it means we need to change how we do things. Some say don't wash it, but for me, that would be hard. It's not easy after a lifetime of old habits to do things a different way. Thanks middleprog1 for contributing to my blog post. Elaine Shuel

I assume you eat lots of fish and vegetables. I would be in deep trouble if I stopped eating chicken. Yes, all of us do rely on restaurants doing the right thing safety wise. That is a bit worrisome but what choice do we have? Thanks for your comment, ET. Elaine Shuel
