I COULD USE YOUR HELP (CONSIDERED CALLING THIS POST BUZZ OFF lol)

I just realized that perhaps someone here can know how to solve my upcoming problem. We have a BBQ and due to a fear of wasps and such, my boyfriend has been called to duty. BBQ duty that is. We are hoping to have a BBQ this coming weekend, Canada's 150th birthday, and if anyone knows how to keep wasps, bees and mosquitos away, please share. We saw a spray that you have to use on the wasps themselves. Well nobody in my family is going to say hold a minute to the wasp and go in and get it and then look the wasp in the face and spray. Incidentally, bees have always loved my red hair. I thought it was my imagination growing up but found out they are actually attracted to redheads. My luck. lol Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

The time of day is important, because mosquitoes are more active at dusk. Don't know about the bees.
Some folks use citronella candles or oil torches to discourage mosquitoes, but I don't know if they help with bees. Avoid wearing perfume or hair spray because bees and wasps are attracted by the scent of those things, and keep the food covered as much as possible.
You can probably find some ideas online. I have heard of people spraying the grass and patio area with something before the picnic, but I don't know what it is.
I feel your anxiety about the red hair..... I don't have that, but for some reason, all my life mosquitoes zoom in on me, and if I get several bites, it makes me sick.

Thanks for those suggestions, Pat. I never heard of using candles. I wish I knew what they spray on the grass. I guess I should look online more.

Yes thanks, I will google it more but sometimes you read things and try it and it fails. I was hoping someone I trusted had a tried and true method.

Thanks so much for your helpful suggestions and for the laugh, Maisie. I never heard of a patio egg. It sounds great. It seems like the gardener should get involved with the issue of bees. I read an article that stated bees are attracted to red hair but who knows?

Last summer, the mosquitoes and gnats were really heavy because of the flood. I nailed a few zip lock bags with pennies, lime juice with water and a dash of joy on my porch. It even worked for my next door neighbor's porch. You can also get a citronella plant. When I hike, I will fold a dyer sheet into my bra strap. That also keeps them away.

If there is one flea, bee, wasp, or hornet in a crowd of people, somehow it will find me so I'll be watching the replies. If you get stung, run the thin edge of a credit card back and forth across the sting and it will dislodge the stinger.

I'm a mosquito magnet, they love me and no matter what I try, they will zoom into me and suck my blood. I can be sitting between my kids and I'm the only one on the menu.

My younger girl is blonde, wasps go after her all the time and I laugh when she freaks out, they chase her in the house every time. Now me, I swat them down to the ground and step on them if they get too close, bees don't bother me at all. I do suggest you locate the wasp nests and spray them with wasp spray, the best time to do that is at night when they are all in the nest. They make nests under the eaves of my house and those are about 20 feet over my head, the wasp spray has a reach of 25 feet. Just remember to stay upwind when you spray and don't stand under the nests, or it will drip on you.

Oh, for the red hair, put it up and wear a hat!

Thanks ET. Lucky for me, my red hair has gotten lighter with age. Perhaps they will have lost interest.

It will find you only if I am not around. My aim is to avoid getting stung. Thanks bijou.

Thanks Rae. I don't think we have any nests right now. We did before and paid to get rid of them.
