WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING ONE OF MANY SIBLINGS?

I just put up a post about how close your family was growing up. I am one of 3 siblings but several who responded seem to have many sisters and brothers. Tell us, what was it like being one of many if you come from one of those large families? Where did you fit in, youngest or oldest or somewhere in the middle? Does birth order matter especially in large families?

For ten years, I was an only child. I sometimes say, I was a lonely child. I thought all my friends that had several siblings had a wonderful life! I eventually had a sister and brother, after my mom remarried. I loved them to pieces, but the age difference made being "siblings" difficult until we were adults.
I read books like "The Family Nobody Wanted" and "Life With Father", and thought if I ever had a family, I wanted it to be a large one. I succeeded in that!

I am the eldest of 10. My brother TJ died in a house fire in 1987, he was the third eldest. All in all we had a lovely childhood. The older children helped rear the younger ones .We were more than happy to do it, because we knew how hard our mother worked. We were never bored or lonely, that's for sure. My youngest sister is only 9 months older than our eldest son.

What was it like? Being second youngest out of 7 was a tough job, but someone had to be in that position. Older brothers tossed me around like a football, it was fun!! My sister was a bully and the favorite daughter, this was the one a couple years older than me, I don't think we ever got along, the oldest sister died when I was two. I remember being very protective of my baby brother and helping him clean his room up so he wouldn't get in trouble with my Mom. We did play outside a lot to stay out of my Mom's way, but even outside, we still got into things and when it was raining outside, lol, we would make blanket tents and camp indoors. When we got bored with that, we would use the blankets to slide down the stairs. I'm amazed my Mom kept her sanity, my guess is she really loved us!

I am really enjoying reading all the responses. I really appreciate your telling us all about your families. Rae, those blankets on the stairs sounds like fun. Your mother must have really loved all of you to allow that.

Elaine, my Mom didn't allow it, when caught, we got into a lot of trouble. Heck, we were kids, we didn't know my parents couldn't afford new blankets. After getting busted with the blankets several times, we discovered cardboard boxes, they went down the stairs faster!!

I'm sure cardboard boxes worked better. Thanks for the laugh, Rae.

Hi. That's a good thing, Poet_Dancer. Being responsible is something that unfortunately doesn't pertain to some people. The eldest tends to be responsible but I know of some that are quite the opposite. Thanks for your comment.
