STATISTICS - HOW VALID ARE THEY?

I wish I could count how many times a study proved one thing and then another said the opposite. Clearly studies have many flaws. At least many of them too. They could be biased or there could be too small a sample. I took statistics and yes they could determine how significant a certain result is. However, despite all that, can we really trust them?

My step brother is a statistician, his whole life is numbers, he even wrote a book on statistics and is a professor at a university, and he even claims not all statistics are true, that is unless he's behind them, lol.

Me personally, because I know how bias they can be, no, I don't trust them.

Yes, as a person that has taken stats too, I agree with that assessment. Unfortunately when an organization gives their stats to provide conclusions, those flaws can lead to inaccurate results. Thanks.LakeWalker.

It's even more important if you listen to the stats to alter your behavior or habits. It's best to check out other studies, to help confirm the validity of the first. Thanks Roxy.

Thanks Rae. I like what your step brother said.

That's exactly right, Maisie. It is all relative. That's why I don't tend to believe the stats that come out about things, without doing further checking. Thanks for your comment.
