What career would you have liked to have?

On one of my posts, someone said that he would have liked to do a different job, than the one he ended up doing. I wanted to become a social worker. My mother knew someone who had become so involved with her , she ended up a drug addict. My mother feared that would happen to me because I care about people. I didn't feel the same but what can I say, social worker was out. I ended up getting degrees in computers and accounting instead, to be practical. It led me to my current job of writing erotica. So, we see how the practical route can turn out.

Did you end up having the career you wanted? I would love to hear what job you did or do now and what you really wanted to do.

Hi Elaine....I come from a family of nurses. My three sisters were all in the nursing profession and my mother once said that was what she wanted to do as well. But she got married and had 8 children instead. It was never my calling to be a nurse as I always wanted to be a secretary. The secretary thing didn't pan out and instead I became a banker and worked in the banking system for 32 years. My next and final career was in property management which was for 17 years. So sometimes your career path doesn't always go in the direction you want but can still be just as fulfilling.

Good for you, Pat. I wish I was there to see you tell off that director. I can't believe they would discriminate against you, for choosing to keep your baby. That's unbelievable. I'm glad you got to spend most of your career being a nurse at a nursing home since that's what you enjoyed most. Excellent!!!

Shartaun03, you do surprise me. I could see you as a nurse, given you are so kind. A banker, I never would have pictured. There's nothing wrong with that of course, or being in property management. You were fulfilled by what you did and that's ultimately what's most important.

I always wanted to be a secretary but alas, it wasn't to be.

There were ten children (one has died) in my family and I'm the eldest. I left school at fourteen and trained as a hairstylist instead. I still fancy myself as a typist though lol.

Welcome to my blog, over22. I have to admit that I haven't seen you around before. Nice to see you here now. You have an interesting history and have had some fascinating jobs. I agree with you about SFF. I didn't realize that starting to blog here, would lead to me meeting so many great people, including you.

Maura, you were one of 10 children, wow. Sorry about your sibling. I'm sure you were kept busy, being the eldest.

I think a hairstylist is a great job. You can be creative. I always had problems with doing my hair. I wish I had your talent.

After my college graduation I wanted to join the Philippine Army with my cousin.I was the only child in the family and my mother passed away before I graduated. After graduation I asked my father if I can join the military but he did not permitted me to go.

He was then at his 70s. My late mother was his second nuptial and had no other children to take care of him. Luckily I immediately got a job. I teached in our high school in our town. I got married and after 6 yrs.. my husband passed away.

I went to Italy we had a successful family business, life is unpredictable things happens. I transferred in the US 5 years ago.

My cousin was a nurse she became a Major and married a General. Until now, when I saw military woman I was wondering what would be my life if I joined the military.

I am happy in my life, I have nothing to regret.

Errors are under your care Elaine.

That was definitely an unexpected response, Betty. Thank you.for sharing it.

I am very sorry about your mother and your first husband. None of us can relive our lives (unless that genie does show up) so we must live with 'what-ifs" if we didn't always follow what we wanted. It's good that you don't have any regrets.

I wanted to be a jockey, I got too tall, ended up being an electronic technician, got bored with that. Opened two of my own businesses, had them for six years, sold them. Women's retail is all I'll say, not giving any store names for my privacy. Ran a ranch, it was sold, so that job went bye bye after I got it back on it's feet again and it started making money. Yes, you are hearing sour grapes here, ticked me off when it was sold. Worked in the oil field business and now retired.

So no, I didn't do what I wanted to do, but still did alright! How many people actually want to grow up to be jockeys? Ha ha ha, not many, I guess I wasn't too ambitious, just wanted to do what I love!!

I would say that's a unique career choice Nileyears but if you would have loved doing it, who cares if it's unusual? I'm sorry things didn't work out but I'm glad you did fine. Thanks for telling us what happened regarding your career.

I wanted to be a judge, but I didn't have the Latin, so I had to go into the coal mine instead.

Are you referring to Peter Cook? I looked it up and read this:

Yes, I could have been a judge but I never had the Latin, never had the Latin for the judgin', I never had it, so I'd had it, as far as bein' a judge was concerned. I just never had sufficient of it to get through the rigourous judging exams. They're noted for their rigour. People come out staggering and saying "My God, what a rigourous exam!" - and so I became a miner instead. A coal miner. I managed to get through the mining exams--they're not rigourous, they only ask one question, they say, "Who are you", and I got 75 per cent on that. I'd rather have been a judge than a miner. Being a miner, as soon as you are too old and tired and sick and stupid to do the job properly, you have to go. Well, the very opposite applies with judges.

If you had to look it up, it doesn't count.

But yes, it's a ref to Cook.

I guess I lose a point then, Rentier1. Do I gain a point for honesty? I could have pretended that I know it.
