I agree with you, Lyn. There are some wonderful people here. There are others that are not so great. I guess that's to be expected. I'm glad you met Ray here. You seem very happy.

    Have a great weekend.
I certainly agree with your second sentence.

The stuff posted here about Obama reeks of racism.

I'm no big fan of Obama, but the charges leveled at him here indicate clearly that racism lingers not far below the surface in The Greatest Nation On Earth.

In fact it's far less acceptable in Germany than it is here.

As someone who was born under the Nazi boot of an ethnic group just above Gypsies and Jews on the extermination ladder, I feel I am entitled to say anything I like about them.

Besides, it happens to be true.

It simply astounds me that someone would be offended by this small exercise in irony.

Is dark humour no longer acceptable?
Rentier1, you can say anything you like on YOUR blog. On my blog, I don't like racist remarks. To me, there is nothing remotely funny about the words "nice swastakis" in any context.

And I rarely delete comments since I see no reason to stop people from making fools of themselves.
I was very uncomfortable with your remark. Perhaps I should have left it there but it bothered me.

    Nope.

I had no idea this would happen.
My blog post was to ask people to tell their first names. I thought it would be nicer to address people that way when responding to a comment. I didn't do it to have someone say they were born in Germany (nothing wrong with that, of course) but then adding that it was listed with a nice swastika stamp. How can you not realize that would offend many people?

    I agree.

She should have left it up.

I doubt it would shock you since you seem to understand my sense of humour better than most.

The problem with the deletion is that the people who didn't see it and are commenting really don't see the context.

All they know is that there was a reference to nice swastikas.

Those two words out of context are quite misleading.

The intellectual vacuity of the general SFF population reveals itself once more for all to behold.
I think I said it in the correct context. You said you were born in Germany and that with a nice swastika stamp (I assume you meant on your birth certificate) your name is (it was too long to remember).

Perhaps all those of a sensitive nature should list the topics they are touchy about at the beginning of their blogs.

That way I could avoid offending people.
I think anyone with common sense would know what is considered racist and would avoid any such comments. I would actually hope they don't have racist thoughts to begin with but that's wishful thinking.

I can't comment on political issues in the USA. I'm a Canadian and I'm far from political.

I hope that others respond to what you wrote about their comments. I don't want to talk for them.

What happens to be true?

There are some things that one shouldn't joke about. I wouldn't make a racist remark and then say.... just kidding. Some comments are hurtful. We don't share the same life experiences and it's best not to assume that someone would just laugh it off.

I never said I was born in Germany.
In fact, I deny being born in Germany.

I suppose a legalistic argument could be made that I was born in Germany, but it would likely only ever be made by a Nazi lawyer.

In that case, be thankful that I didn't put in the name of the street where I was born as it appears on that birth certificate.

That would really have gotten your knickers in a twist.

You can probably check with National Defence HQ in Ottawa about my Queen's Commission. They might confirm it.

Or I could send you a photo of it, I suppose.

When did people not born in Canada stop being Canadians?
If that's true, you better notify the passport office since they still seem to be issuing Canadian passports in such cases.

I would never claim to be Mickey Mouse.

May I assume you were equally outraged over 'The Producers'?

I'm really enjoying this.

This is great fun.

I especially like the comments from people who didn't see the original post.

Pontification from a platform of ignorance is always good for a giggle.

How about you repeating the words you used? It was only 1 line and I believe on this site it would list by your blog, the comments you made.

I didn't memorize it but you said German or Germany and that it had a nice Swastika stamp. You then said your full name.

It's all about common sense. Every religion has its own special symbols. It's fine to refer to one as "nice" IF it didn't later become a symbol for hatred.

I spoke to a friend about what happened and he told me a story. He's a year younger than I am. When he was a kid, he went to a mosque. He had already learned by something he was given as a child, that a swastika was part of the Indian religion. He asked why there were no swastikas in the mosque. The answer he was given is that their ancient mosque built in the 1920s HAD swastikas all over the floor, part of the design. The one built after the war DIDN'T have any swastikas at all. The person said to him, WHY have something that was a symbol that had become so negative put in their mosque, when there were so many OTHER symbols they could and did use.

The point I'm making is YOU chose to use those words to upset me or those reading my blog. You knew that those words would offend some people.

The difference is that Mel Brooks is Jewish. It's similar to me saying something about my family or friend that isn't flattering BUT if someone else does it, it's not fine. Those who watch Mel Brooks's movies, know he pokes fun at things.

Upon reflection it was a bad idea to put my name out there.

Mel Brooks never lived under a Nazi regime.

I did, so I think I have as much right, if not more, to make fun of them.

Fine, I didn't memorize what you wrote and the German/Germany part didn't have anything to do with what was upsetting. The point is that I asked a simple thing, for first names only. If you were making fun of Nazis, this wasn't the appropriate place to do so. To me, it sounded like you were for the Nazis and at the very least, were out to upset people.

Honestly, I didn't really like the movie "The Producers". I found it offensive for different reasons.

You can make fun of them or anyone on your blog, as long as its not considered promoting hatred. I think part of the problem was that, what you wrote wasn't clear that you were against what happened with the Nazis. it sounded like you were a Nazi sympathizer.

Well, here's the problem.

Apparently others were upset by your report of my comments as well.

So before I would consider reposting it, you would have to get the approval of all those others who had been offended.

And even if you did that, I would still be reluctant because there are others who didn't post a comment or didn't read this blog who might be offended.

Now that I understand how hate-filled my remark was I wouldn't under any circumstances risk a repetition of this imbroglio, no matter how much I have enjoyed it.

That's certainly your choice, Rentier1. I really hope one good thing comes of this. I hope that before you write something that could be so hurtful, you'll think twice. That may be wishful thinking on my part but I'd really like to believe you didn't purposely try to offend I wasn't aware of the history of the swastika so there is a chance that you didn't say it in the negative way it was taken.
