 There is similar event involving a Brit who walked across Afghanistan.
He met a dog on the way who accompanied him for the rest of his trek.
Dogs are not treated well there. They are expected to fend for themselves.

He left the dog with a friend in Pakistan intending to bring him home to the UK, but unfortunately the dog go sick and died before that could happen.
