My mom's mom's second husband was the Credit Union Commissioner for Texas around this time. He received a personal visit from LBJ. The reason? Lyndon wanted some questionable loans made to some of his buddies.

Grandpa Bruce was, himself, 6' 3" and every inch a southern gentleman. He was also a man of impeccable morals. Gravitas overload.

He told Lyndon (in most gentlemanly terms) to take a hike.

I am VERY proud to have known this man.

As far as J. Edgar Himmler, Hilly was a student. Those FBI files (a who's who of Washington power) didn't deliver themselves to the hildabeast when she was a resident of the White House.

At the risk of being a suicide-by-2-in-the-back-of-the-head, I suspect this is why hilly is still not in jail.

You are lucky that LBJ didn't opt to shake your hand while he was sitting on the pooper.

How interesting! Of course we all know that DC is full of intrigue, deceit, and corruption, (and murder and mayhem) but your innocent foray into the edges of it as a youth had to be memorial.
I was caught by the comment about the Senate cafeteria....... famous bean soup? Might that explain all the hot air that is spewed in the sessions there?

For a racist LBJ made some unusual move on civil rights.

Well, LBJ may have been a racist, but what he did for civil rights, whatever the reason, reflects well on him.
