SOCOTRA ISLAND, THE MOST ALIEN LOOKING PLACE ON EARTH.

Socotra is " A UNIQUE ISLAND OF YEMEN". One of the most strangest island in the World. Everything about the island is strange, its landscape, its plants and its animals . The flora and fauna on Socotra island is considered the 'jewel' of bio-diversity.The plants are all funny looking and have weird structure. Some animals on the island are slightly bigger and scarier, like the chameleons, the crabs, the lizards, the blue, black and brown scorpions, the blue spiders, the blue face monkeys and other animals. The landscape is weird and you feels like you are on an alien planet.

It lies to the east of the Horn of Africa and south of the Arabian Peninsula. The island is very isolated and a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. It has been described as " The most alien-looking place on earth". Socotra is part of Yemen. In 2008, it was recognized by UNESCO, as a World natural heritage and it is a protected area. It is also called " The Lost World" of Socotra, The trees and plants on the island have evolved to suit its hostile climate and some varieties of plant are a staggering 20 million years. Most of the species found on Socotra island, are endemic and cannot be seen anywhere else on Earth. A remote island with plants up to 20 MILLION years old, Socotra the remote Island is home to around 800 rare species of flora and fauna, the most famous is the "Dragon Blood Tree", a very abnormal looking umbrella-shaped tree which produces red sap. Whose name is derived from the fact that by carving its trunk it pours out a red resin, it is said by the ancient belief, to be the blood of the dragon.
~Adenium obesum
~Caralluma socotrana
~Kalanchoe farinacea
~Aloe and Euphorbia spiralis
~The cucumber tree and other rare plants not found in other parts of the world. The birds species registered are more than 140.

The inhabitants of the mountains are living in caves. (They are nomads, descendants of an old South Arabian tribe speaking still the old Arabian dialect Soqotri related to the Mahri dialect). Some live in primitive houses with roofs from palm leaves and tree stems.
The whole island and its coasts are under the protection of the Yemeni Conservation and Development Authority that declared the island a “Naturally Protected Area” and, in collaboration with the Yemeni Tourism Authority produces a guide for Eco tourism. Nature has granted Socotra with many beautiful elements thus, locals strictly make sure everything has been preserved, much as respected and conserved. Equally they are committed to the sole guardian of the island. Below are a few collage which I have done, to enable you seeing the utmost of Socotra island.

I hope the description of this strange island and the few related pics have pleased you. Thank you for your read and your views.
Sincerely,
Lisa.

Interesting example of how the plant life adapts to survive. I recognized many of them but with some unusual adaptions.

Spiritwoman, hi,

With a great joy, I welcome as usual on my blog post. I am so glad for your visit and for your nice comments as usual too. You are right that these plants on that island, could adapt themselves to the hostile weather and also to the stiff soil as such. Am also stunned by the way they grow there and of their shapes too. Thank again for your appreciation Spiritwoman. Have a pleasant day.
Lisa.

If any day I'd wake up in a place like that, had thought I'd be in other planet. Sometime ago I posted about this Island. Your information is more complete. Thanks, Beth.

MrsJoe hi

My great pleasure reading your nice comments and am also pleased for your visit as well. This island has just a few if its native inhabitants, who are used to this type of life and environment too. But they are definitely protecting it as it is. And the island will be intact. No modern facilities, no modern life as well, they are just living primitively. At least a place on earth which is still natural and wondrous.
Thanks again MrsJoe and my warm greetings to both of you.
Lisa.

Glumo, dear lady,

Am so happy for your visit and your wonderful comments. You are always welcome on my blog. It's true that awaking on such an island would make us feel being on another planet !, I wonder if ever I would be able to live in there. Those natives are used to this type of primitive and they are happy for it as well. Unfortunately, I must have missed your previous post about this island. I usually prepare some of my blogs and keep them in a file for future use, therefore I have just revised it and got it ready to post. Am glad that my info has pleased you Glumo.
Thanks again for your appreciation. I wish you all my best.
Lisa.

It's like another Galapagos. Strange and beautiful.

Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

Just had another look, I really like that red flower with white dots having the pentagon shape around the hole in the centre. That is unusual, and the 5 petals around it. Also the spider looks like our deadly funnel web, but more colourful. Wonder if it is also deadly? Interesting that lovely blue is in the spider and monkeys, not a usual colour of nature on land to my knowledge.

Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

Hermitin, welcome bacl again,

Thanks for your second post on here, am glad for it. The flowers you see on these pics, are really odd and rare ones, same as the trees also. you can notice their sizes even and eventually the blue spider and blue face monkeys which I myself have never seen before. There is also a type of colorful strange lizards but due to limited space, I couldn't post other pics. I have done a collage just to be able to show the utmost pics I could.
Thanks again Hermitin, hope reading you again in the future.
Have a nice evening.
Lisa.
