"GRAPEFRUIT AND ITS NUTRIENTS"

Dear Readers, today Grapefruit is the theme of my blog. For those who can consume it, here is the main description.

Grapefruit is a large citrus fruit related to the orange, lemon and pomelo. Grapefruits are categorized as white (blond), pink or ruby. However, this terminology doesn't reflect their skin color, which is either yellow or pinkish-yellow, but rather describes the color of their flesh.
With some varieties featuring seeds while others are seedless. It has a wonderful flavor and It is juicy, tart and tangy with an underlying sweetness that weaves throughout.

1- Grapefruits are usually eaten fresh by slicing the fruit horizontally and scooping out sections of the halves with a spoon or separate the flesh from the membrane by a serrated grapefruit spoon.
2- Grapefruits can also be eaten like oranges. You can peel them with your hands or with a knife and separate the membranes.
3- Another way to serve grapefruit is to peel and slice them.

Nutritional Profile

Information on a full array of nutrients,

Grapefruit is an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids) and vitamin C.
It is also a good source of pantothenic acid, copper, dietary fiber, potassium, biotin, and vitamin B1. It also contains phytochemicals including liminoids, lycopene, carbohydrates, sugar, soluble and insoluble fiber, sodium, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and more. Grapefruits may help in loosing weight too.

A Few Quick Serving Ideas

Grapefruit sections add a tangy spark to green salads.
Instead of your morning glass of OJ, have a glass of grapefruit juice.
Combine diced grapefruit with cilantro and chili peppers to make a unique salsa.
To enjoy a salad with a tropical flair, combine chopped grapefruit pieces, cooked shrimp and avocados and serve on a bed of romaine lettuce.

Individual Concerns: Grapefruit and Drug Interactions

It is advisable to check with your healthcare practitioner about consuming grapefruit juice if you're taking pharmaceutical drugs , cause certain pharmaceutical drugs combined with grapefruit juice become more potent.
Compounds in grapefruit juice may slow down the normal detoxification and metabolism processes in the intestines and liver, which hinders the body's ability to breakdown and eliminate these drugs.

Thereafter enjoy your Grapefruit as advised for a good health.
Wishing each and everyone all my best.
Keep watching on your health as it is the real treasure of all of us.
Lisa.

Hi Lisa: Love all the pics showing different ways to use grapefruit. I love red grapefruit slices sprinkled with Splenda. Yes when taking certain medications we shouldn't eat any grapefruit, and there are some medications where we shouldn't eat any cheese.

Grapefruits are very good for the health of course but one must be aware also.

I too do not eat grapefruit anymore. It doesn't agree with one of my medications. I remember as a kid we always had grapefruit for breakfast on Sunday morning. It was a special treat. I am glad I can still have oranges as I really enjoy eating them.
