When I was a kid, there was maybe one obese student in the whole school. There were no fast food restaurants around then. Now there are fast food restaurants, pizza places and donut shops on every block in every city, and every second person is overweight. I was at the hospital yesterday and almost every patient in the waiting room, and almost all the nurses and office staff were overweight. I see the staff going into WalMart in the morning and some (mostly women) can barely walk they're so fat. Is a woman of average height weighing 180 lbs. and up the new 'normal' weight now or maybe this is the time for the schools and government to do something about this epidemic?

And what do you see as the solution to the problem of food producers adding unhealthy substances to your food for the sole purpose of monetary gain?.........

Forest/trees Maisie, once again you have missed the boat on labor.

Companies using part time labor to avoid paying healthcare insurance is as old as the hills. It goes back long before Obamacare.

As far as hiring 49 employees vs. 50, that's ridiculous too, unless you don't care about growing your business.

Employers don't hire because they are "well intended do-gooders" wanting to make people's lives better! They hire because they NEED people .. because they have more work than they can handle. Because employees bring MORE MONEY into the business!

If that's not the case Rush Limbaugh you don't belong in business!

Maisie, another thing is that there were hardly any working moms when I grew up. Now so many families need two incomes so there is no time and energy left after work to make healthy meals and pack healthy school lunches.

So true Bijou but in many of those instances, due to high priced housing in areas like Toronto and Vancouver, it often takes 2 family incomes to survive, especially in younger families. That wasn't so prevalent when we were younger,, plus may of us lived in outlying areas. But more importantly, back then many women just did not work outside of the home. Even with both parents working, I always managed to have meals prepared ahead of time and that included lunches!

I was just on the phone with my daughter as she was getting ready for work and getting her two boys (ages 10 and up and ready for school. I heard her tell the older one that if he was finished with breakfast to get his lunch fixed. She gives him choices and he fixes his own so she knows that he will at least eat it.
We told the government that we don't want them in our bedrooms, and I think they should stay out of our kitchens too. We need to teach our kids good nutrition, and I believe it should be taught in the classrooms too, but not forced by government regulations. There does come a time for personal responsibility and choice.

Yes paying benefits is pricy.

And I don't need to read a small business P&L to know that your Walmart, McDonalds, etc. employees are the working poor. And they're on public assistance!

I don't need to read a P&L to know that if employers paid workers WHAT THEY NEED TO BE SELF SUFFICENT then I wouldn't have to support them!

I'm for small government.

You aren't aware that people working full time jobs qualify for public assistance. Are you kidding!!! Who doesn't know that!

A little tip to help you prevent inanity.........When someone quotes a comment, their response is based on that comment......My comment is in response to Dan's comment........Should be obvious, but you so often make this mistake.........

When your Republican argument falls apart, sure, pull out some buzz words like Socialism or Communism.

Cashiers and guys dropping fries TYPICALLY don't drive BMWs or live in "the priciest apartments in the city". Who's going to rent them that apartment or sell them that car. And not all public assistance is based on income vs. car and rent payment. Obamacare/Trumpcare for example.

Also an individual's work ethic has absolutely nothing to do with this because there will ALWAYS be people working for minimum wage .. again forest/trees.

And where are your 30 hour per week Walmart employees going to get healthcare? You're going to buy it for them.

I didn't use the words lifestyle or guaranteed income.

But the formula is just too simple ... wages and benefits up = public assistance down.

BTW 50 employees is no small number and not what you would call a small mom and pop business. It's a good cutoff number for obvious reasons.

So if you can't afford to hire or grow your business don't do it. Basic business P&L.

Oh My God...........The reason I told you that my comment was a response to Dan wasn't because I think only Dan should respond......The reason is.....and I thought that would be obvious, that if you read Dan's comment,
and then read my response, you will see that I was responding to what Dan said,
which would make your comment redundant.........We have had the same problem many times. You have responded to my comment without reading the comment I was responding to and made incorrect assumptions which you could have avoided by reading what I had quoted..........

Self sufficient meaning not able to receive public assistance because as a full time employee you would make too much money to qualify for public assistance .. as per guidelines. Public assistance could be reduced not eliminated. How hard is that to understand!

And in all ridiculousness and in your way of thinking why have labor law at all? Shouldn't McDonalds be allowed to pay employees in hamburger meat? Considering the government provides everything anyway .. housing, telephone, utilities, who knows what else, why not cars and college education? ? ! There's your lifestyle issue, lol.

I'm for small government.

That's because we are trying to help you out by pointing out your confusion.Trying to help you out, doing a good deed.......Your own confusion is invisible to you.....There is probably a term for your condition in DSM-5.......

It's obvious why you need short declarative sentences and are so easily confused......Your own mind is prone to chaos........Or else it's another of your attempts at gaslighting......I know from experience that either of those options are likely.

The French seem to have figured out how to feed healthy meals to school kids.
How come we can't do the same when we are richer?
