After walking all over the store, my legs, especially the right one, is usually screaming at me to get off of it. If I only have a few items, and the check lines are long, I will use the self check just so I don't have to stand in line for very long. That hurts my legs more than the walking.
It's when I'm standing there in pain, that I consider the online/pickup ordering...... but when it comes to my groceries, I want to chose my own fruit and veggies, and I like looking around for unexpected bargains!
I've also noticed the automation in the fast food restaurants of folks filling their own drink cups, and I've seen pictures of some using customer order kiosks instead of the person behind the counter. One day, the only employees needed will technicians to fix the machines that take the orders, cook the food, and assemble it.

One............. I can never understand people who rip into packages!
Two............. it never dawned on me how easy it would be to put products into a bag without scanning them in the self check area. Guess being dishonest isn't on my mind.
Three........ when I can't find something that I normally buy, I like to ask a person, for the same reasons you just gave. He/she will be able to see if there is any in the back or when it is expected.
I like the personal interactions with "store people"......... sure you find some sour ones, but mostly they are polite, friendly and helpful. Maybe they just like helping an "old" person? LOL

With the invention of the ATM I thought we had gone "about as fir as we can go" and was ecstatic. And now I feel good about self-checkout for the same reasons. I can buy my extra small condoms and her extra large Poise pads without anyone asking if I found everything OK. As an aside, the Costco receipt-checker ask if I found everything OK and I said NO! All the stores continually move stuff around to mess with my head so I will buy more sh!t. We used to stop in at the Dover WaWa's for food to go and I really liked the self-ordering system. Did you ever try to get a hamburger w/o cheese! impossible. Personally I think personal service only works for aggressive obnoxious people. Like the people who have to pass on the right to get 1 or 2 car lengths advantage. Or the A-hole that has to have a long conversation during check-out. Our closest McD has the most courteous kids I have ever seen, but I still hate yelling at a box because my voice doesn't carry. Also, no matter how many self-checkouts, there is always an attendant... to enter my military discount at Home Depot for instance. It does seem SCO offers a lot of opportunity for theft.. I do empathize with the checkers' jobs though. And I do have a fav at our WM Market I wait in line for

"My personal favorite is " Do you want your milk in a bag " ? Answered with
" No, I would prefer if you left it in the carton ". I gotta remember that one!!!!

Are you sure they don't hide stuff from me in the store room? LOL. I only ask someone if it is something I usually stock up on, and I hate shopping and have to drive 20 miles to the nearest Walmart and I see they are bringing other stuff out of the back for the shelves. And SOMETIMES, they do have it hidden and bring it out because I asked nicely! ROFL.

I bought the Costco size of aluminum foil so I shouldn't run out for awhile. Like driving to get somewhere, I shop to get what I need and get on with life. I don't need a personal experience in a store to validate myself. Half my family, maybe more is from the south

I worked various aspects of retail for years, loved it and managed to keep in shape. It was like going to the gym and getting paid for it. Once I hit 60 - OUCH!!!! I loved the social aspects of the job. People still recognize me in the community. Earlier this month - one of my grouchy old customers was having difficulty operating the self-check machine. I started pulling out his produce and punching in the PLU codes and bagging everything for him. He made an improper proposition because his wife is in a nursing home. I told him "No FiretrUCKING Way. He said he was going to tell the store manager on me. I told him to go on ahead. I retired last year.

The Wal-Mart AND Sam's Club where I worked eliminates most of the full-time positions and replaced them with part-timers. Most retails are doing this. The biggest complaints that I heard from associates was not about the wages but about the lack of hours. Quite a few of them worked a second job which creates scheduling problems. There was a turn over because once they did find a better job, they would leave.

One of my challenges was that customers would frequently ask where something was and I didn't know where it was. I usually know where to look for it. Things get moved around so often that it is impossible to know where everything is unless you personally stocked it.

There was a customer who was looking for Matzo Balls. My fellow West Virginia associates didn't know what Matzo Balls were. The store didn't have it but I knew that Kroger had it and exactly where it was at Kroger. I was able to tell her exactly where to find it.

I was in an Atlanta Publix looking for Teff Flour to make Injera Bread for our Quaker Potluck. It would be impossible to find in my local West Virginia Community. My son has an application on his phone for Publix which tells exactly where the products are. Awesome.

I don't mind using the self checkout machines.

I can't use them a lot of the time because they don't handle discounted items, and they don't give me a credit for bringing my own bag as some stores do.
