I agree that the higher minimum wage does not really help those who need it most. I don't know about college kids working for extra money though, My nieces both work around 20 - 30 hours a week year round to pay for living expenses which are not covered in their scholarships. I think the days of working in the summer to pay for college are a thing of the past since the cost of tuition even to state colleges here in CA comes out to more than what the stats say supports a family of 4 living at the poverty level. If the students are out of state it's much more. All of this before we even get to the cost of private colleges.

The niece who lives in student housing has to pay $3000.00 per quarter (that is 12000.00 a year . The one that lives at home has to pay for a decent car and a the cost of long commute. Of the 10-12 students sharing the immediate area with her only 1 does not have a year round job regular job. Back in our day the numbers would likely have been reversed.

It was always tough to be a "starving student" but it does seem much harder today.

Unfortunately you are right about the raising minimum wage not helping these folks. The nieces already make at least as much as the new minimum would give them.

    Quoting  :

I completely aid for my masters program for what my niece has to pay for one quarter of living in campus housing. Interesting about Shakespeare. We had to read him in the 9th grade. My nieces are both pursuing sciences so only have to take one basic English class and that only covers some of the mechanics of the language.
